Twitter When you’re on top, everyone comes for you. The Southeastern Conference, which has won the last seven BCS national championships, is undeniably the cream of the crop in college football. Yet despite its amazing run, there are still some coaches out there who think the league is overrated. Enter Bob Stoops, Oklahoma’s head coach. This week, when speaking about the “gap” in college football between the SEC and its brethren, Stoops told Tulsa World: “Well, it depends on what gap you’re talking about,” Stoops said. “What are the bottom six doing?” “So they’ve had the best team in college football,” Stoops said. “They haven’t had the whole conference. Because, again, half of ‘em haven’t done much at all. I’m just asking you. You tell me.” “So you’re listening to a lot of propaganda that gets fed out to you,” he said. “You’re more than smart enough to figure it out. Again, you can look at the top two, three, four, five, six teams, and you can look at the bottom six, seven, eight, whatever they are. How well are they all doing? In other words, Stoops is arguing that the SEC is top-heavy, and that his league, the Big 12, might be the better conference on the whole. Whether you choose to believe that or not, Alabama coach Nick Saban didn’t seem very concerned with Stoops’ words: Saban on Bob Stoops’ SEC comment: “I haven’t seen it. I’ve got more important things to do than sit around and read what Bob Stoops says.” — Cecil Hurt (@CecilHurt) May 10, 2013 Saban added that he “really likes Stoops” but added that “people who don’t play in our league (SEC) … don’t understand how tough it is.” — Cecil Hurt (@CecilHurt) May 10, 2013 Saban pulling the “you don’t know” card was predictable, but the question remains as to whether the SEC is a notch above the other major football conferences. After all, Texas A&M was able to make the switch from the Big 12 to the SEC flawlessly – though it did help that it had Heisman-winner Johnny Manziel. In the end, the real debate is whether you should compare conferences based on their best teams or their overall accomplishments. My guess is that we won’t have a consensus on that any time soon.
