In the second of my “12 for 12″, the dozen posts to talk about the things that need to be good in order for this season to be a good one, no matter what the final record is, I talked about Kenan Memorial Stadium. In that article I gave my theory on how this season the place that North Carolina football calls home needs to be packed. Unfortunately this seems not to be the case, as an article on Inside Carolina reports that the ticket sales are “down 1,200-1,300 range” compared to the last couple of seasons.

In the article there are several reasons that were mentioned as possible reasons why the sales have been lacking compared to the past years. And without a doubt spending $ 315 for seven games, which we all know turns into more (or even a lot more) due to all the side activities one does at a game, is not a small amount of money. If this is then something for a family the dollar value can easily reach the thousand level. Even if the school has not raised the cost of the season package, this still shows that the health of the economy could be a factor in all of this, over shadowing that UNC has a new coaching staff and an exciting new offense. Or it could be the fact that maybe some of the fans are tired of the off the field stories and are staying away from all of it. Or it might be the back lash that comes from the supporters of former head coach Butch Davis who are still bitter on how he was fired.

Whatever the reason might be does not really matter, what does matter is that Carolina needs to get Kenan Stadium as packed as possible. With two in state games that could be called rivals in East Carolina and N.C. State and a big time ACC football power in Virginia Tech all coming to Chapel Hill this should be reason enough to have good attendance. The good thing is that people just want to go to those games they can, as the above state article says that all seven games are all still available to the public: $35 for either Elon or Idaho, $50 for either Georgia Tech or Maryland and $60 for East Carolina, N.C. St or VT.

In the end it’s going to be interesting how the turnout at the games will be. And, like it or not, it might be how head coach Larry Fedora and his North Carolina football team does on the gridiron that gets people to the stadium, or keeps them away. The one thing that I just want to say about all of this… whether you are upset with the school’s off the field things, be it the academic wrong doings, the way they handled the firing of Butch Davis, or anything else the squad and coaches out there this season have nothing to do with it. So let’s not punish them for what others did and let’s support the new staff and the young men that are going to represent Carolina this season.
