One of the favorite memes among the college football bloggerati involves Alabama and their ever increasing count of mythical national championships. Obviously, these things are somewhat easier to tally these days, thanks to the BCS, but the Wild West days of yesteryear still offer plenty of opportunities to fabricate greatness. Just ask Ole Miss. Via Deadspin, we learn of Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze’s tweet touting the program’s three national titles, complete with three crystal football trophies. Of course there’s a little fudging going on here. It’s par for the course. But if we’re gonna pick nits, we can leave no nits unpicked. It appears Deadspin was a might loose with the fact checking. Ole Miss has never won a national championship in the BCS era, meaning that it would never have received any of the crystal football trophies depicted in that photo (please note that the BCS logos have been clumsily photoshopped out of the image). The trophy you see there isn’t actually the BCS trophy. Thats the American Football Coaches Association trophy, and it’s been handed out since 1986.
