During the last six weeks I have been detailing the play of Oregon Ducks' quarterback Marcus Mariota.

While it might be unconventional to consider a freshman for the Heisman Trophy, Mariota is making a name for himself as the play caller for the No. 2 ranked University of Oregon.

Finally this week another sports commentator validated my thoughts that Mariota is a legitimate Heisman contender.

Dan Vasta, affiliated with Yardbarker.com, wrote that while quarterbacks Geno Smith of West Virginia and Matt Barkley at USC are among the leading candidates, Mariota might steal some Heisman votes.

Mariota has led the Ducks to a 6-0 record, 3-0 in Pac-12 matchups.

They embarrassed the No. 23 ranked Washington Huskies 52-21 over the weekend. In that game Mariota threw for four touchdowns and 198 yards. He hooked up with tight end Colt Lyerla for two of those TDs.

For the year, Mariota has thrown for more than 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns. Halfway through the season the red shirt freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii is completing 67.9 percent of his passes and averaging 216 yards per game in the air.

In addition to being a passing threat, Mariota is rushing for more than 5 yards per carry.

The Ducks have a few days of rest coming up as they do not play this weekend. Their next opponent is Pac-12 rival Arizona State University.

They visit Sun Devil Stadium on Thursday night October 18th. This will only be their second away game. The unranked Sun Devils are 4-1 thus far. ESPN plans to televise the conference match-up.

After that game let's see if more sports reporters and enthusiasts jump on Mariota's Heisman bandwagon.
