Chip Kelly may have left the Ducks to try his breakneck offense in the NFL, but he left Oregon in great shape. The Ducks, who finished last season ranked No. 2 in the final AP Top 25, shouldn't stagnate under new coach Mark Helfrich, the team's offensive coordinator who is obviously acquainted with the speedy spread-option. Oregon finished 12-1 last season, won the Pac-12 Conference and defeated Kansas State 35-17 in the Fiesta Bowl. The Ducks' flashy offense averaged 49.5 points per game last season, second in the nation, and was among the top five in rushing (315.2 yards per game) and in total yards (537.4 yards per game). Oregon was adroit on defense, too, allowing just 21.6 points a game and topping the nation with 40 takeaways. While stars Dion Jordan, Kiko Alonso, John Boyette and Kenjon Barner have all moved on to the NFL, Oregon is still rich with talent, including quarterback Marcus Mariota and running back De'Anthony Thomas. Helfrich is the first to sa...

Oregon Football: Game-By-Game Predictions For 2013

Despite Chip Kelly's departure for the NFL, Oregon Football is going to be very much in the National Championship picture.New coach Mark Helfrich will see if he can change the Oregon stigma. Marcus Mariota makes the cover of college football's Rolling Stone

Duck quarterback Marcus Mariota is the regional cover boy for Sports Illustrated's College Football Issue. The Webfoots last won this honor with Jeremiah Masoli in 2009. Keep in mind, the SI cover jinx is a classic case of selective memory and sample size, like when folks point to the two and three-stars that become All-Americans. Breathe, and remember it's good that the...

Oregon football recruiting: Fastest player in college football wants Oregon offer

Tyreek Hill has offers from Florida State and Alabama, but he wants one from the Oregon Ducks. The 5-9, 186-lb. running back from Garden City Community College in Kansas has been timed in 9.98 (wind-aided) in the 100 meters. As high school track star he ran the 200 in 20.14, the second fastest time in national prep track history. You can't teach speed: in a game against Butler...

Who could unseat the Ducks as the Pac-12 standard?

Rising Programs The Oregon Ducks are currently the standard of excellence in the Pac-12, there is no doubting that. Coming off their second straight BCS Bowl victory and a No. 2 finish in the polls, though they missed out on their fourth straight Pac-10/12 Championship because of Stanford, they were still undoubtedly the team to beat in the conference. This coming year doesn’t...

Injury news is rarely good news, but Ducks press on

Freshman speedster Thomas Tyner left the Hatfield-Dowlin complex in street clothes, wearing a walking boot and on crutches. Jason Quick of the Oregonian reported that Tyner was wheeled out of practice on a cart. In post-practice interviews head coach Mark Helfrich seem to suggest that the boot was precautionary, telling Quick, "To my knowledge he is 100%. The boot business...

Si.com gives the Ducks a preseason downgrade

Sports Illustrated's legendary college football preview issue is out, and it's a massive but meaningless snub for the Oregon Ducks. The magazine rates the Webfoots fifth in the country, behind Alabama (understandable), Stanford (questionable), Texas A&M (ludicrous), and Ohio State (a tribute to their cream puff schedule). Gabriel Baumgaertner wrote the preview, which...

Oregon Ducks Playmakers to watch this season

No Chip, No Problem The Oregon Ducks, even without Chip Kelly, rank No. 3 in ESPN’s preseason power rankings. As you may know, offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich has taken over Kelly’s job as head coach. Seeing as how Helfrich ran the offense, the offensive scheme will look very similar. I’m sure the play calling will be different, but this will still be a fast-paced offense...

Ducks in the NFL: Chip Kelly acquires Jeff Maehl from Houston

Like Cristin McLemore before him, Jeff Maehl was a tough, gritty receiver who became a fan favorite by making big plays. Today Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles traded reserve lineman Nate Menkin to Houston for the rights to Maehl, making him the fifth former Duck on the team's 88-player roster, joining Will Murphy, Isaac Remington, Dennis Dixon and Patrick Chung.
