Last four years filled with pain

I picked a rough time to attend college. I graduated into a slumping economy, and jobs aren’t easy to find.

Also, the OSU Beavers have endured four of their most devastating seasons in a row.

Here are some OSU Beavers football games that have left me crying in my beer for far too long on a Saturday evening in Oregon.

5) September 3, 2011: Loss to Sacramento State sets season tone

Someone who lived in Sacramento asked me after the game how the Beavers did. I told them they lost 29-28. They asked me who they were playing. I told them Sacramento State.

I kid you not, this was their response: “Sacramento State has a football team!?”

The Sac State loss would ultimately set the table for a horrid 3-9 season, as well as represent the fall of Ryan Katz.

4) December 4, 2010: Ducks dance on Reser

For the last two years in a row the Beavers had lost the Civil War game. Each Civil War loss kept OSU out of the Rose Bowl. With the Oregon Ducks needing one final win to reach the BCS Championship game, it seemed revenge was oh so close. In a season where everything had gone wrong, it was Civil War at Reser Stadium; the table was set.

For the first quarter things actually looked kind of good, with OSU keeping pace and leading 7-6. Then things got worse, and worse, and worse. UO would end up winning 37-20. One of the worst feelings in the world is watching your arch rival storm your home field and celebrate.

3) December 3, 2009: Beavers once again lose out on roses

In 2008 the Beavers lost in the Civil War. In turn, they headed to the Sun Bowl while USC lucked into the Rose Bowl. Come 2009, the Civil War would once again determine who went to the Rose Bowl; but this time, it would be either the Beavers or the Ducks.

The game was by far one of the most exciting and excruciating I have ever watched. Most of the time OSU seemed in control. However, a fresh LaGarrette Blount—who wasn’t supposed to be playing after his punching of a Boise State player in the Duck’s first game of the season—was too much to overcome.

Despite ample opportunities in the 4th, the Beavers can’t put any points on the board and lose 37-33.

2) October 9, 2010: James Rodgers injury destroys season momentum

The 2010 season wasn’t supposed to be disappointing. Ryan Katz was the shiny new QB, the Rodgers brothers were ready to go out on a high note and Mike Riley had stacked the schedule to prove this team had what it takes.

The Beavers came into #9 Arizona 2-2 with plenty to prove. And even though they won this game, a crippling knee injury to star wide out James Rodgers would set the table for disappointment.

OSU would go on to lose three close games to UW, UCLA and WSU. They would finish the season 5-7. It’s hard not to think that with James Rodgers they could have won those games, putting them at 8-4 and third in the PAC-10.

1) November 29, 2008: Civil War seals Rose Bowl fate

This game sucked, plain and simple. Especially for me. I was there with my dad, a freshman in college at his first Civil War ever hoping to see his beloved Beavers heading for the Rose Bowl. Instead, he had a 65-38 loss dumped right on him.

The 2008 loss was way worse than the 2009. The Beavers never felt as dominant in 2009 as they did in 2008. There were no stunners, no win over #1 USC. 2009 never screamed “this is a great football team,” quite like 2008 did.

And, the 2008 team was great. They just weren’t prepared. The offense did what they had to do—you don’t usually lose a game when you put up 38 points—but the defense played slow all game. They weren’t ready for the Ducks speed. I’m pretty sure UO ran the same play about 100 times: hand off the ball, get to the outside, punch it up field 10-20 yards.

The Beavers played their style of ball, and the Ducks played theirs. In the end, the Beavers were decimated, the Rose Bowl was out of reach, and four seasons of disappointment had just begun.
