Maybe nice guys can finish first.“The winningest coach in Oregon State football history might also be the nicest,” said ESPN reporter Gene Wojciechowski of Beavers’ head coach Mike Riley.“Coach Riley, he’s a calm guy. He will definitely get his point across, but he doesn’t have to do it with yelling” said wide receiver Brandin Cooks in an ESPN interview. This year, however, he might yell from excitement. Riley, in his 12th year with Oregon State University, is having the season of his life. At 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference, the Beavers are ranked 7th in the BCS standings, just behind arch rival Oregon in the Pac-12. Riley is following in the footsteps of his father who also coached at Oregon State.“He never uses curse words or foul language,” OSU wide receiver Markus Wheaton told ESPN. “He might say ‘jiminy Christmas.’”Nice to know in this politically correct world someone still has the guts to say Christmas. Riley and his team have lots of guts and lots of heart. They needed that heart and a solid defensive effort to pull off a 21-7 win over Utah Saturday evening in the autumn Oregon rain.Though the visiting Utes out gained the Beavers in offensive production, 307 total yards to 227 and dominated them in time of possession by almost nine minutes, the OSU defense caused four Utah turnovers, which turned out to be the difference in this game. The Beavers scored one touchdown after a Utah fumble, and another one after an interception.Next week the Beavers will need their defense and their offense on track when they travel to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies. But with the best start for the Beavers in more than 100 seasons, Oregon State and coach Riley have already guaranteed that this season, nice guys definitely don’t finish last.
