Junior running back Bernard Pierce (Ardmore, Pa.) was named the MAC offensive player of the week today. This is the seventh time in Pierce’s career and third time this season he has received this award.

Pierce broke five Temple records in this weeks’ 34-0 win over rival Buffalo. He became the all-time career leader in touchdowns (rushing and receiving) and broke his own single-season mark for touchdowns and points scored. For his career Pierce has 44 touchdowns, and 18 this season. The previous mark for single season touchdown was one Pierce broke his freshman season with 16. Pierce now has 102 points on the season, breaking a record he and kicker Brandon McManus shared with 96 points in the 2009 season.

Pierce leads the MAC with 844 rushing yards and leads the nation with 17 touchdown runs. Pierce is also number two in scoring (14.57 ppg) and number eight in rushing (120.57) yards per game in the country. The Owls are 17-1 in the last three seasons when Pierce carries the ball at least 18 times a game.

Another Owl getting awarded this week is senior tight end Evan Rodriguez (North Bergen, N.J.) who was named to the 2011 John Mackey Award mid-season watch list. The list is compiled of the 25 best tight ends in the country. Rodriguez is one of eight seniors on the list and the only player from the Mid-American Conference. Rodriguez has compiled 19 receptions for 281 yards and a touchdown and is the Owls leader in receiving yards, second in receptions and receiving touchdowns.

The 2011 John Mackey winner will be presented live at the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on December 8, 2011, at 6 p.m. EST on ESPNU. The John Mackey Award, established in 2001, is awarded annually to the most outstanding tight end in FBS college football. In addition to demonstrating outstanding athletic prowess on the field, the award also stands for positive sportsmanship-like behavior, good academic standing & exceptional leadership abilities.

The award recipient is determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee, which is composed of respected members of the media and former NFL players.

The Owls (5-2, 3-1 MAC) are next in action this Saturday October 22nd when they travel to Bowling Green (3-4, 1-2 MAC) and take on the Falcons for the 3:30 p.m. contest at Doyt Perry Stadium. Flagship WPHT (1210 AM) will carry the game on the radio in Philadelphia
