For the first time since 2007, the Nittany Lions (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) beat the Iowa Hawkeyes (3-2, 0-1 Big Ten) on the football field, avenging some tough losses at the hands of the Hawkeyes over the past few seasons along the way.

The Lions dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball as Silas Redd ran for 142 yards and Curtis Dukes chipped in 60 yards on the ground for the Lions.

The defense forced a fourth-quarter turnover of Iowa quarterback James Vandenburg that led to a Matt McGloin touchdown pass to put the Lions up for good.

Here’s what we learned from the Lions 13-3 win over the Hawkeyes yesterday:

  • Matt McGloin is the Lions’ quarterback. Though he didn’t start, Rob Bolden did, McGloin threw all but seven of the Lions’ pass attempts and Bolden didn’t see any action in the fourth quarter. Expect McGloin to start next week against Purdue.
  • “Linebacker U” is back. The Penn State defense is as good as advertised, and could be the difference in Penn State’s chances at a Big Ten title. They held Iowa to just 253 total yards.
  • The kicking game is no longer a concern as Anthony Fera has excelled both kicking field goals and punting for the team so far this season, the kicking game was an early question mark after Sam Ficken missed three field goals in the first two games.
  • Penn State’s crowd made a huge difference. Beaver Stadium was electric all afternoon and the noise played with Iowa’s inexperienced offense all day.
The Lions host Purdue for homecoming this week, the Boilermakers pounded Minnesota yesterday 45-17 but have been inconsistent early on this season, as evidence by their 3-2 record with big loses to Notre Dame and Rice. It’s probably safe to assume that Matt McGloin will be at quarterback for the Nittany Lions next Saturday as they try and move to 3-0 in Big Ten play.
