It was an inevitability that the sordid Penn State scandal would find it’s way to Hollywood, as reports have come out that a talent agency are shopping around the idea of a movie based on Joe Posnanski’s recent penned book Paterno,  the novel he wrote about the late Penn State coach.  And word has it that Hollywood heavyweight Al Pacino is in talks to play the lead role, which would make total sense—a little gray streaking in the hair, a prosthetic nose and some oversized glasses favored by today’s elderly gentleman and presto, Pacino becomes Paterno in much the same way Charlize Theron became Aileen Wuornos for the film Monster, only not so creepy and disturbing.

Deadline has the details…

ICM Partners next week will be taking a package for a movie about former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno, with Al Pacino attached to play the man called JoePa by most students at Happy Valley. The package will be built around Joe Posnanski’s biography Paterno, which is now atop The New York Times Bestseller List in its second week. Pacino’s manager, Rick Nicita, will produce.

Paterno died at the age of 85 back in January, not barely three months after being fired from the university in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky horrors.  Seeing that the scandal dominated the national headlines for months on end, expect this movie to make its way to the big screen, and when it does it will be interesting to see how Pacino tackles the lead role.  Will he portray Paterno as a doddering fool seemingly unaware of the acts of depravity going on right under his nose, or will he play him as a man who put the Penn State football program above the safety and welfare of innocent children?

We’ll just have to wait and see.
