The NFL Scouting Combine really got going yesterday, as QBs began their workouts for NFL teams and scouts. All eyes were on potential #1 pick Andrew Luck and the 2nd most sought after QB, Heisman winner Robert Griffin III. Griffin caused jaws to drop in his 40 time, as he posted an official 4.41, which is blazing fast for a player under center. But as impressive as his speed was, the QB position is really about being able to sling around the pigskin. It wasn’t Griffin or Luck that eveyone was talking about after the throwing sessions (they didn’t participate). The guy that grabbed everyone’s attention was former Michigan State QB, Kirk Cousins.

Cousins has been working out with former Heisman-winner and former NFL QB, Chris Weinke. Weinke has become known as somewhat of a QB guru the last few years, working with young quarterbacks in preparation of the NFL Draft. The word on Cousins is that all his passes were not only accurate and crisp, but he showed impressive arm strength, including an ability to zip the ball on shorter and intermediate routes.

While at Michigan State, Kirk Cousins displayed immense leadership in his three years as the starting QB. He set school records in passing and wins, while leading MSU to back-to-back 11-win seasons, the first time that was done in school history. Detractors on Cousins point to his decision making ability in important situations, claiming that sometimes he plays outside his skill set.

Cousins did so well in the drills he participated in, that he is already shooting up draft boards. He was originally projected as a middle round draft pick, someone to hold a clipboard and run scout. But with an impressive showing with unfamiliar targets, and the ability to show how smart he is at the position, he could very well be the 3rd or 4th QB taken in the draft. A strong pro day, where he will have familiar targets BJ Cunningham and Keshawn Martin participating with him, might guarantee Cousins a 2nd round spot.
