Sammy Watkins WR Clemson #2 Ht: 6’1″ Wt: 205 All of our scouting reports are limited to our premium customers. If you would like access to all of our 2014 scouting reports, click here to sign up. Size/Athleticism: Watkins is built like a No. 1 receiver and has the speed to go with it. He’s a serious threat after the catch and Clemson frequent gets him the ball on short, quick routes to allow him to make plays with the legs. Separation Skills: Watkins has the speed to get deep but his route running is still developing. He can win on go routes by simply blowing past the corner on the line of scrimmage, and he has the strength to win against press coverage fairly consistently. However, Watkins is still learning how to get open on more complex routes. He tends to round off his breaks and does display the elite quickness in his routes that he shows when running with the ball. Ball Skills: This is the one major drawback to Watkins’ draft stock. He has a tendency to drop some very easy passes, and also struggles to adjust to the poorly thrown ball. Additionally, on the rare occasion that Clemson sends him down the field he elects to let the ball come to him rather than going up and high-pointing the ball. He has size, but he isn’t a physical receiver in traffic and not the type of guy you can rely on in jump ball situations. Intangibles: Arrested in 2012 for marijuana possession. Durability: Knocked out of 2012 bowl game with a leg injury. Battled through other minor injuries throughout his career. All of our scouting reports are limited to our premium customers. His most significant impact at the next level will likely come as a slot receiver due to his ability to make plays after the catch. His inability (or, perhaps, unwillingness) to challenge for balls in traffic makes him a better fit in a West Coast offense. That said, the physical tools are there for him to develop into an elite well-rounded receiver.
