What is there to say about Johnny Football that hasn't been said already this weekend? Here's my take. Johnny Manziel is fun. Brett Favre fun. And good. I can't imagine he'll ever be a great pro quarterback but who cares. We still have three more years of him at Texas A&M, plus a few more Saturdays this season. And by the way, Manziel had the game of his life at Alabama in the Bear Bryant bowl. Scrambling, running, throwing, whatever it took as he led the Aggies over the previously unbeaten Crimson Tide. It was the game of the year so far in college football. I don't know what it was like where you were but all eyes were on Mainzel where I was yesterday. Compelling television.I get the idea we are heading for another Tim Tebow though in terms of attention and moving the media needle. I hope not. But it's probably inevitable. Anyone nicknamed "Johnny Football" and plays like that is going to have eyes on him. Wherever he goes.Speaking of Tebow, I overheard this conversation from a guy to a young lady who had just shouted an expletive when Florida blocked the Louisiana Lafayette punt with 13 seconds left to secure a comeback win in The Swamp."I take it you don't like Florida," he asked."I hate Florida," she responded."Is it because of Tebow?" Dead serious. Hilarious. So the Gators escaped yesterday, barely. Missouri did the same against Tennessee and Northwestern folded late against Michigan. But Penn State flat out got robbed in Lincoln against Nebraska Saturday night. That ball was across the goal line. Totally different game if that touchdown is help up and not ruled a fumble. Bill O'Brien may be the coach of the year in college football this year. Unfathomable circumstances and a depleted roster. I hope they finish strong. The kids on that roster and O'Brien deserve some rewards for what they've accomplished this season. Mainzel now finds himself right in the middle of the 2012 Heisman Trophy picture. It's anybody's guess at this moment, but it looks like it has come down to Mainzel, Colin Klein and Kenjon Barner. You can make a case for all three but I'm going with Klein at the moment. He's been the most consistent. Plus his team may be number one in the country by the time you read this.I saw this scroll across ESPN yesterday. "an anonymous source says Phil Jackson may be coming back to the Lakers. He really like this team." Um yeah, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Dwight Howard and Paul Gasol. Phil is nothing if not an opportunist...Did you see the touchdown called back against Tennessee from Cordarrelle Patterson yesterday? What a joke. The kids high stepped in to the end zone the last three yards of a reverse from about 20 yards out. Apparently he was "taunting." Incidents like that make the NCAA look more like the NFL. That's the last thing they want to be. Let the kid have a little fun. It was harmless... Erin Andrews pre game show on FOX is awful. She's better on the sideline ... The ACC is playing bad football. Sooner or later this would have to improve wouldn't it?  ... The Big Ten isn't much better but they're trending upwards. Ohio St, Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin should all be improved next year. Plus Urban Meyer and Brady Hoke are recruiting as well as anyone ... According to ESPN Notre Dame can't make the BCS title game if they, Oregon and Kansas State all finish undefeated. That tells you all you need to know about sportswriters and their view of the Fighting Irish this year. That would have been unthinkable 20 years ago... Michigan was without Denard Robinson, but Devin Gardner was every bit as dynamic as "Shoelaces" in the Big House yesterday... How about UCLA? Jim Mora has them in the best position they've been in in quite some time ... That's a big game this week. Battle for Los Angeles, USC vs UCLA. And the coach with the most security isn't on the Trojan sideline ... Speaking of USC, Does Lane Kiffin know who his boss is? The days of Mike Garrett looking the other way are gone. Pat Haden is an honorable man. He can't be taking lightly Kiffin's lack of regard for the rules, no matter how small they are. I would think, check that, I'm certain Haden would expect his athletic department to conduct itself with a certain amount of honor. That's not Lane Kiffin's operating style. Throw in the fact he's not winning at a typical USC clip and don't be surprised if Kiffin is gone at the end of the year if his team doesn't finish strong. That's just the beginning though. Tennessee and Arkansas will be looking for a new coach. Auburn may be as well. Who will be filling these spots? Too soon to tell but they'll all be calling Gary Patterson at Texas Christian. Patterson has built TCU in to the best position it's been in years, at the age of 52, he might be willing to jump to if it's the right job. And with that defensive pedigree he's be an instant fit in the SEC. Sad thought of the day. Just two more weeks left in the regular season of the best sport around... See ya next week.
