Baseball is back and so is my Cup-A-Joe feature. So here we go...
We already know about the big four-way battle for the fifth spot in the rotation between veterans Freddy Garcia and Tim Redding, and rookies Jon Niese and Bobby Parnell. But another interesting battle to keep an eye on this spring is in the outfield.
Jeremy Reed who came over in the Putz deal, will be competing with Cory Sullivan for a reserve outfield spot. Both are shockingly similar type players. Neither one has any power to speak of with Sullivan having a slight advantage in career slugging percentage which can probably be attributed to ballpark effects. They both can play all three outfield positions and are better known for their defense more than their offense, although at one time Reed was once a highly regarded prospect. The Mets have no reason to carry both of these outfielders, so expect one of them to go to Buffalo.
