The picture above was of Jessica Dorrell and her fiance Josh Morgan. Morgan is the director of swimming and diving operations at the University of Arkansas. That wedding (planning) was crashed this past week when Dorrell end-up on the back of a hog driven by Arkansas football coach Boddy Petrino.

Petrino later admitted to a ”previous inappropriate relationship” with Dorrell. Maybe people in the south don’t inbreed — that’s ridiculousness. But it appears people within the University of Arkansas keep it in the family.

I took a step back from the funny parts of the Petrino story this weekend. In the end, the question becomes, will Petrino be Arkansas’ head football coach this coming fall.

I believe the answer will be a resounding ‘no’. However, that doesn’t mean I agree with it.

If Petrino was unfaithful to his wife, is that in itself a fireable offense?

I look at it from the point of view of an Arkansas alum. Petrino is in a very high position within the University of Arkansas. Thus, he does represent the university. This means you can’t be running around lying and cheating.  It’s going to create problems very quickly. As an alum, I would certainly be upset that Petrino has brought this attention upon the school. That said, I’m not sure I would be mad enough to be calling for his head.

Petrino is 75-26 in NCAA football since taking over in Louisville in 2003. That includes his 34-17 record while at Arkansas. he is also 2-1 in bowl games over the past 3 seasons. In other words; he has brought Arkansas back to relevancy in the SEC.

It becomes a weighing of pros and cons. Are Petrino’s actions enough to make the Razorback fans forget about those 34 victories?

It’s not that I don’t have some history of agreeing with axing head football coaches. For example, I called for Paterno’s head immediately. Who didn’t? Well, a lot of people (believe it or not). That includes, mainly, Penn State alumni.

Obviously, this Petrino situation is far different. It seems Petrino being out the door is a foregone conclusion. But the amount of bad publicity Paterno brought to Penn State is much greater than what Petrino has put in Arkansas’ lap. But it people wanted Penn State to retain Paterno then obviously retaining Petrino is at least an option.

The University of Arkansas has been in a similar situation before. The school’s officials believe they were forced to fire Nolan Richardson in 2002 after his controversial remarks.

Arkansas has only made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament one time since coach Richardson was let go. Were Richardson’s actions so bad that he had to go? Knowing where the program went post-Richardson, I bet a lot of Razorback loyalists wish he was still in Fayetteville now.

Be careful what you wish for, Arkansas.

And back to Louisville for a second; they had their own coaching infidelity scandal this past year. In fact, at this time, the Pitino story appears to be much worse. And he is still at the helm at Louisville.

The Cardinals just had a run to the Final Four. And now you see why Pitino was retained. If he is making Final Four runs, the University of Louisville will hide his skeletons in their own damn offices.

To fire, or not to fire? That is the question. What do the Razorback fans want?

I think I paint a picture of a difficult decision. However, I am leaning towards the decision of firing Petrino as likely being a mistake at this time. Of course there will be more evidence leaked in the coming days and weeks which could change everything.

All of this said, I think the University of Arkansas officials should just hide and hope this goes away. I mean, there’s some precedent for that. Don’t Arkansas officials have a history of this type of behavior?

I was originally going to title this article, “Bobby Petrino Should Not Be Fired.” However, upon further review, maybe what I meant to say was “Arkansas Alumni Should Not Want Petrino Fired.”
