Steve Spurrier knows the only thing South Carolina lost last week was a football game. He hopes his players understand that, too. Spurrier said the ninth-ranked Gamecocks (6-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) can still achieve all their goals, chief among them taking control of the SEC's Eastern Division this week when they play at No. 3 Florida (6-0, 5-0). Saturday's winner doesn't clinch a spot in the conference title game, but will have a stranglehold on the top with only a couple of games remaining. Spurrier was a disappointed as anyone at South Carolina's 23-21 loss to LSU last week. Still, Spurrier thinks the team can rebound this week and take a big step toward winning its second SEC East championship in three seasons. ''If we're going to win our division, which we hope to do, this is a crucial game,'' Spurrier said. ''We all know that. I don't know how else to say it, except we'll go down there and be ready to give it our ...

Spurrier might bench DT Quarles for throwing punch

COLUMBIA, S.C.-- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says he'll discipline defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles for punching a player at LSU last week. Spurrier said Wednesday the discipline would probably involve missing game time. A video on YouTube shows Quarles punching LSU center P.J. Lonergan in the facemask after a first-quarter play in the Tigers' 23-21 victory. Spurrier...

Spurrier's teams past, present now grind it out

GAINESVILLE, Fla. The cultural shift taking place is certainly not unprecedented. In some ways what Will Muschamp is doing is what Steve Spurrier did 22 years ago to the Florida football program. When Spurrier returned to Gainesville to take over his alma mater, the Gators had been a run-oriented, in-your-face defense kind of program for much of the previous decade under coaches...

Gators thriving by sticking to the run game

GAINESVILLE, Fla. A confluence of rare circumstances has created a curious tone leading up to Saturdays Florida-South Carolina game at The Swamp. When South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was calling ball plays for the Gators, his quarterbacks often threw for 138 yards in a quarter...

Gators don't want Gamecocks celebrating in Swamp

The last time South Carolina played at Florida, the Gamecocks celebrated a division title. Coach Steve Spurrier got doused and carried to midfield. Players hooted and hollered on the sideline, in the locker room and on the flight home. The Gators remember it vividly. ''That's a feeling you'll never forget,'' safety Josh Evans said. No doubt, third-ranked...
