COLUMBIA, SC - NOVEMBER 28: Stephen Garcia #5 of the South Carolina Gamecocks drops back to pass against the Clemson Tigers at Williams-Brice Stadium on November 28, 2009 in Columbia, South Carolina. (Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images)
Let me be the first to admit that the "dismissal" (if it holds true this time) of Stephen Garcia is several years in the making. The now former starting quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks has finally been put out on his collective rear, bringing to an end an undistinguished playing career fraught with more whining than wins.

Many felt Garcia had the potential to be an above average quarterback in the SEC, but over the course of his tenure at USC, he showed a bigger tendency towards disappointment and frustration than wins and accolades.

Now, with his career as a Gamecock officially over, Garcia has been set free to continue down whatever road he darn well chooses, and the Gamecocks don't sound too heartbroken to see him go.

"We remind all of our student-athletes that there are consequences for their actions. For Stephen to return to and remain with the football squad this fall, we agreed on several established guidelines. Unfortunately, he has not been able to abide by those guidelines and has therefore forfeited his position on the roster. We wish him the best of luck as he moves forward in life."

Those were the fond words of farewell given by South Carolina athletic director, Eric Hyman. Hyman's business-like sentiment was echoed by head coach Steve Spurrier.

"We all feel like we've given Stephen numerous opportunities to be a student-athlete here at South Carolina. Obviously, he has chosen not to follow the guidelines of his reinstatement contract. We wish him the best."

His last offense, reportedly a positive test for both marijuana and alcohol, is just the cherry on top of a wasted career for what might have otherwise been a talented quarterback.

So, what's next for South Carolina? Connor Shaw becomes the starter and the Gamecocks continue their quest for an SEC Championship.

As for Garcia, he'll likely ponder whether he should have transferred after all?
