Tryann Mathieu, the former LSU cornerback known as “Honey Badger,” recently made an appearance on the NFL Network and the young man cut open a vein while discussing the off-the-field issues he admits he caused for himself, specifically discussing the reasons why Les Miles dismissed him from the Tigers football team on Aug. 10, 2012. And what he says was the source of all his troubles? To paraphrase Mathieu’s words: “Because I got high.” Yep, that blasted toking on the wacky tobacky, marijuana. According to a Pro Football Talk report, Mathieu told the NFL Network that he first started using marijuana when he was 12 or 13 when a family member offered some to him. He says that quitting marijuana was “a big struggle,” but insists that is all in the past now and that he is focused on resurrecting his football career with an NFL team willing to give him a chance. “All the things I put before football in the past, it’s not fun anymore — marijuana and everything you put before football is obsolete now,” he said. “It’s smoking marijuana and then it’s all the things you kind of surround yourself around,” said Mathieu, adding, “The marijuana was the issue but it was the social things, too, that I had to get in line.” Mathieu reports that the most common inquiry he received during interviews with NFL teams at the Scouting Combine was the reason behind him getting booted of the LSU Tigers. Says the Honey Badger:“It probably was, ‘Why did you get kicked out of school?’ which I think they already knew but I think they want to hear you say it.” When he was asked what response he provided, Mathieu, admitting that most teams already knew the answer but were curious about his honesty and integrity. With that in mind, he reports he said, “Marijuana.” The young man is undoubtedly talented and certainly not the first NFL prospect to run afoul because of pot, so there’s little doubt that many NFL teams will be lining up and willing to take a flier on such a gifted athlete.
