Jamel Martin is the backup Freshman Running Back for the Bowling Green Falcons. The feature back Anthon Samuel has been stellar, rushing for over 100 yards 5 times this year, and has easily sealed the starting job over Martin. But in Week 5 Samuel got hurt, and Martin stole the spotlight, rushing for 111 yards on 23 carries. Before Week 5 Martin had 10 total carries for 50 yards and a touchdown. Following Week 5 he got 5 more carries for 21 yards and a touchdown. He was doing a great job of backing up Samuel, and everything was going well for the huge 6-1 190 back…until Week 8 happened.
Last Saturday against Temple Jamel had 4 carries for -6 yards, an abysmal -1.5 average. He also caught 2 balls out of the backfield for 5 yards. That means he touched the ball 6 times and totaled for -1 yard. I’m pretty sure that is the definition of counter productive.
I’m going to go out on the limb here and predicting that Martin does better next week. I don’t think he can do any worse, considering 0 yards would be an improvement.
