It was a good news/bad news sort of day for Oklahoma Sooners fans.  First the bad news.

Senior center Ben Habern has decided after a series of neck and back injuries to retire from football and focus on his studies.  Habern has been hampered by injuries throughout his career at OU and most recently his injuries have been just frightening enough that although he's been given a clean bill of health is just too delicate to risk further injury which could jeopardize more than his playing career.  Habern is a Human Relations major and by all accounts a good student.

What this means?  It means that it'll essentially be business as usual for the Sooners oline.  Junior Gabe Ikard was in line to start at center until Habern was fit, so his retirement was a smart move.  Probably wasn't going to see the field a ton, and his draft potential had certainly taken a hit. I wish him all the best.  Boomer Sooner!

now the good news.  The Sooners have also announced today that suspended wide outs Trey Franks and Jaz Reynolds as well as sophomore defensive back Quentin Hayes have been re-instated.  No word on when they will be able to actually play, but it sounds like they got their grades in order and are back on the team.  This means they will be playing this season.

What this means?  It means a talented wide receiver corps just got really really good.  Reynolds and Franks on the depth chart with Kenny Stills and Kameel Jackson make a potent top 4, and that doesn't even include the talented newcomers Troy Metoyer, Durron Neal, Sterling Shepard and Derrick Woods round out a very talented group.  And those last 4 names will now have a chance to sit and practice and learn and not be thrown to the wolves on Saturdays.  In short, this offense, with questions at running back just got much more potent in the passing game.  I understand it's not a given that these guys end up back on the field, but I have a gut feeling Stoops is going to let them back on sooner rather than later.

Sooner fans have to feel bad that we lost Habern.  He's been a warrior in crimson and cream and he will be missed.  But it helps cushion the blow to hear that 2 of quarterback Landry Jones' favorite targets will be back in the pattern.
