Cincinnati won the inaugural International Bowl in Toronto, Canada 27-24 over Western Michigan. The Bearcats built a 24-0 second-quarter lead, spearheaded by two touchdown passes from Nick Davila to Dominick Goodman, but the Broncos battled back to tie the game with 10:53 left in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati kicker Kevin Lovell hit the game-winning 33-yard field goal with 6:11 showing on the clock.
The contest was the first college bowl game in history to be held in Canada, and it lasted until 2010. The game also served as the debut for Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly. Two months earlier, Kelly had led Central Michigan to a victory over Western Michigan, making him the first coach in college football history to beat a school with two different teams in the same season.
