LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- Quarterback Colby Cameron led a late-surging Louisiana Tech offense, throwing for 292 yards and running for a score as the No. 24 Bulldogs beat New Mexico State 28-14 on Saturday. The victory gave Louisiana Tech its first win as a ranked team and a chance to remain in the Top 25 for consecutive weeks for the first time in school history. Three turnovers prevented NMSU from taking advantaged of three Louisiana Tech missed field goals and a flat running game that left the Bulldogs leading only 7-0 after the first half. It was the fewest points scored in a half this season by Louisiana Tech. But Cameron got Louisiana Tech back on track. "I guess we are human," said Cameron. "It was kind of like a gut check to us that we need to get better." Ray Holley had 133 rushing yards and an 83-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career for Louisiana Tech (7-1, 2-0 WAC), which failed to win a game as a ranked team in two previous tries. In 1999, Louisiana Tech reached No. 25 but lost to USC. The Bulldogs weren't ranked again until this season, when Tech entered its game against Texas A&M at No. 23 but lost in a 59-57. Louisiana Tech continued with its streak of breaking records Saturday after punter Ryan Allen hit an 85 punt in the first quarter. That broke a school record and was the longest this year for an FBS team. The 28 points for Louisiana Tech were the fewest scored all year, and comes just a week after the Bulldogs beat Idaho 70-28. NMSU (1-7, 0-4 WAC) dropped its seventh game in a row. The loss marks the 52nd straight year NMSU won't appear in a bowl game.
