This Week in College Football, 9/29/12

The one thing the BCS committee did not want to see before going to a new playoff format in 2014 could be unfolding in front of their eyes this year, as there could be three undefeated and highly powered teams for the two spots in the National Title game in Miami, January 7, 2013.

Which one of these three teams - Alabama, Florida State or Oregon will be the odd team out in January?

As it stands right now, one spot will be filled by the winner of the Alabama vs. LSU game on November 3rd (I see the Crimson Tide going to Baton Rouge and beating up the Tigers this year to avoid any doubt who should go this year) while the other team will come from the survivor of Florida State and Oregon.

Florida State, after coming back and running away from Clemson in the fourth quarter last week 49-31, has a relatively clean ride to their end of the season game vs. Florida in Tallahassee, while Oregon, who trounced Arizona 49-0 last week, still has to play USC (11/3) and Stanford (11/17).  If they both go undefeated I see Oregon getting the other spot over an undefeated Seminole team based on strength of schedule.

For the rest of the “unbeatens” only West Virginia may have an outside shot, but they would need some luck in their first year in the Big 12.  So in light of this, I would like to pass along my apologizes to Kansas State, Notre Dame and the rest,  but none of you don’t hold a candle to these three teams this year and would only be an appetizer for Alabama machine.

I will be glad to see the playoff format in 2014, as I am tired of seeing good schools miss out on opportunities to prove themselves, as Oklahoma State should have gotten a shot at the undefeated Tigers last year, instead of the Crimson Tide (even though they won, they did not deserve the rematch).  In a four team playoff West Virginia would most likely be the last team in.

Here is this week’s look at the Top 10:

1.  Alabama (4-0) –The Tide get Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa this Saturday night.  Tide by at least 40

2.  Florida State (4-0) – The Seminoles go to South Florida and need to stay focused against the 2-2 Bulls.  This could be a trap game, but this team is focused and will win by 21 points.

3.  Oregon (4-0) – The Ducks, like Fla. State has to stay focused as they go to Seattle to battle the Washington State Cougars. The Ducks should wrap this up by halftime and win by 35.

4.  LSU (4-0) – The Tigers fresh off their narrow win at Auburn get a cupcake game vs. Towson.  This should get them ready for their next game against Florida in Gainesville.  LSU by 30.

5.  West Virginia (3-0) – The Mountaineers got a scare from Maryland and could get another this week as Baylor comes to visit.  Bet the over and West Virginia in this one vs. the Bears by 10.

6.  South Carolina (3-0 )- South Carolina travels to Kentucky, where they should have their way with the Wildcats.  Gamecocks by 28 points

7.  Georgia (3-0) – The Bulldogs get Tennessee in Athens this weekend.  The Bulldogs are trying to stay up with South Carolina and Florida in the SEC East division.  Georgia’s will prevail in their first real test this season by 14 points.

8.  Kansas State (4-0) – The Wildcats defeated Oklahoma, like I predicted and now has an off week.  They get West Virginia in two weeks in Morgantown.

9.  Stanford (3-0) – The Cardinal were upset by Washington at Husky Stadium 17-13, and will drop out of the Top 10 next week.

10.  Notre Dame (4-0) – The Fighting Irish kept their unbeaten streak intact by beating Michigan 13-6 in an ugly turnover ridden game, and now they are off until they get the Miami Hurricanes on Oct 6.

Heisman Update

  1. West Virginia QB Geno Smith – 30/43 for 338 yards, 3 touchdowns in their win.
  2. Florida State QB EJ Manuel – 27/35 for 380 yards, 2 touchdowns and 102 yards rushing on 12 carries.
  3. Michigan State RB Le’Veon Bell – 253 yards on 36 carries and a touchdown
  4. Notre Dame LB Manti Te’o – 8 Tackles and 2 interceptions

Game of the Week

Ohio State vs. Michigan State, Saturday 3:30pm, September 29, 2012 at Spartan Stadium, MI

The Buckeyes go to East Lansing and take on the Spartans in what will be a battle of two rushing offenses.  The Spartans led by Heisman candidate RB Bell will try and play smash ball with the Buckeyes, while Ohio State will unleash their Heisman hopeful in dual purpose QB Braxton Miller who can cause problems for one of the top defenses with his feet and arm.

This will be decided by who stops who on the ground, and I think the Buckeyes will  have just enough of Miller to keep them undefeated.

Prediction:   Ohio State wins a close low scoring game 20-17

Record: 3-1
