The past week had the latest version of the Game of the Century. I feel it was a great game, more of a chess match than a heavyweight fight. Each time LSU would not get their first downs, they punted the ball and kept Alabama pinned deep. This made the field long each time. Fortunately for the Tigers their kickers were on the mark all night (especially the 73 yard punt which was one of the key plays in the game), while Alabama kickers missed on 4 field goals and did not punt well either.

The Tide offense was more efficient than LSU, but the Tigers made the most of mistakes by Alabama to get their two field goals. The biggest thing that hurt the Tide offense was the penalties, especially for illegal substitution (12 men on the field). These hurt drives, and put them in long kicking situations, which ended up being unsuccessful. Having the game go into overtime showed the problems the Tide were having with their offense by taking another ill timed penalty and a sack. These mistakes caused the missed field goal. LSU jumped on the opportunity by finally taking their chance by throwing when the Alabama offense thought they would run to set up the long field goal. LSU completes a screen pass that puts them down inside the 10 yard line and two runs later they kick the winning field goal on third down, LSU 9-6.
