Coach Miles and Tyrann Mathieu during better times
LSU dismissed Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu for team violations. This definitely changes the outlook for the preseason #1. Losing Chuck Bednarik winning, Heisman finalist, consensus All-American is never a positive for a team; even a team as deep as LSU. This is an unprecedented situation in college football.
Without question, this alters the course of LSU’s upcoming season. A player of this magnitude being dismissed 22 days before the 1st game of the season dramatically alters preparation and strategy for the Tigers. Time will tell if this circumstance galvanizes the team to play at national championship caliber like the bar incident last season did.
It is never good news when a national championship contending program closes practice to the media for 3 days, and then moves up an evening press conference to noon on a Friday amid radio/Twitter rumors of player suspensions. With Vice Chancellor/Athletic Director Joe Alleva looming large in the room, the announcement was made in a tension packed room.
