Tweet The UCLA Bruins football team was rolling coming into November, but they were also looking for some answers to an inconsistent running game. They decided that the right idea would be to let freshman Myles Jack get some work carrying the pigskin. The interesting thing about Jack, though, is that he was already seeing a lot of time on the other side of the ball for UCLA as a linebacker. With him playing both sides of the ball now, he’s put himself in some rare air in terms of the Pac-12. On Monday, Jack was named the Freshman Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year for the conference, the first player to win both awards since the inception of the honors in 2008. As a linebacker he has accrued 70 tackles, five tackles for loss, an INT, a blocked kick and 10 pass breakups. His work on the offensive end has given him a bit more notoriety, though. Since first getting duties as a ball-carrier on Nov. 9, Jack has garnered 267 rushing yards on 37 carries while finding the end-zone seven times—he’s done this in just four games. Though the media hype surrounding Jack’s performance certainly aided his cause in winning both awards, there’s no doubt he deserves to be in the mix for both of them. More than that, it’ll be fun to see what the young man can accomplish in his college career going forward.
