HOUSTON On Saturday, the University of Houston scored 13 points in a loss to Texas State. By Monday morning offensive coordinator Mike Nesbitt had resigned. The Cougars (0-1), who led the nation in total offense last season, got just 326 yards, went 1-for-13 on third downs and completed just 17 of 44 pass attempts in a 30-13 loss to Texas State, which is in its first season in the Bowl Subdivision. First-year UH head coach Tony Levine did not offer a reason for Nesbitt's sudden resignation. Travis Bush, who had been coaching the running backs, will take over playcalling duties. "We wish Mike the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions to the Houston program," said Levine. "We are confident in Travis and his play-calling ability moving forward." Levine hired Nesbitt last winter when Levine took over the program from Kevin Sumlin, who left for Texas A&M and took offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury with him. Under Sumlin and Kingsbury, and with a lot of help from quarterback Case Keenum, the Cougars spent most of the last four years near the top of the national offensive rankings. Keenum finished his career as the NCAA's all-time leader in career passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions. Nesbitt appeared to be on his way up in college football. A 1999 graduate of New Mexico, he helped Blinn College win a national championship in 2006, coached an offense at West Texas A&M that ranked second nationally in its division in 2010 and last year was the coordinator for a Stephen F. Austin offense that ranked in the top 15 in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense. When Levine made the hire in January, he praised Nesbitt's grasp of the Air Raid offense. "We went through an exhaustive search process and talked to a number of great college coaches," Levine said, "but Mike is exactly what I was looking for and he really wants to be at the University of Houston."
