On Tuesday the team held its first scrimmage of the year, which resulted in the offense having the better day. This is a tricky result, however, because I’m not sure whether to be confident in our offense or scared about our defense. The offensive line showed great promise in the first scrimmage, which helped Travis Wilson have a fine day out on the field, even though he left the game early with a tweaked ankle. Wilson’s ankle injury is nothing to get all worked up about, even though he did sit out practice on Wednesday.  There are no reports of the injury being anything serious, and if it was closer to the start of the season we may have seen him at practice yesterday. Also on the offensive end, Utah’s two tight ends, Westlee Tonga and Jake Murphy looked very good. With these two tight ends and a solid group of wide receivers, Wilson shouldn’t have many problems locating targets. We just need to see if he can hit them. One factor leading to the offensive success in the first scrimmage could be the absence of some of Utah’s defensive starters. Blechen is still sitting out with tendinitis in his knee, and Trevor Reilly, Eric Rowe, and Tenny Palepoi sat out for reasons other than injury. Some bad news for the Utes was announced yesterday, which is that JC transfer Tevin Carter won’t be able to play in the 2013 season due to academic reasons. Carter was expected to be a starter at safety, and with him not being able to play, this leaves us thin at the position. Also, DT Stevie Tu’ikolovatu and RB Jarrell Oliver both suffered season-ending injuries yesterday. All in all, the bad news dominates the good so far, but with exactly two weeks until our opener against Utah State, there is still plenty of time to see improvements.
