PLAYERS: Andre HeidariPat Haden
TEAMS: USC Trojans
Since we have taken the time to point out everything that USC has done in the past month that doesn’t paint them in the best light, we also must take the time to point out when they decide to right a wrong. On Wednesday, we wrote that the university decided to ban Los Angeles Daily News reporter Scott Wolf for reporting an injury to kicker Andre Heidari. USC banned Wolf from practice for two weeks and USC’s game against Cal for violating their policy barring the media from reporting strategy or injury-related news observed during in-season practices. Wolf and his editor at the Daily News, Gene Warnick contended that the report didn’t stem from a practice and the two met with USC Athletic Director Pat Haden on Wednesday. And as a result of that meeting, the ban was lifted. Wolf tweeted the news Wednesday night: I am happy to say my football practice ban was lifted after talks with Pat Haden and area sports editors. Practice policy talks continue — InsideUSC (@InsideUSC) Septe...

Hobbi stepping in at center for Trojans

LOS ANGELES -- His name isn't Matt Barkley, Robert Woods, or Marqise Lee, but he may be called on to touch the ball on every single play for No. 2 USC (2-0) in their conference opener at No. 21 Stanford (2-0) on Saturday. He is redshirt freshman offensive lineman Cyrus Hobbi. USC center Khaled Holmes was carted off of the field at MetLife Stadium in the Trojans win against...

The Matt Barkley Sweepstakes: Week 1 Update

Week 1 may not have revealed much about the identity of our eventual Super Bowl winner, but it certainly did shine some light on the future team of Matt Barkley. A bright, searing hot spotlight of shame and misery, in fact. And unlike last year, when the consensus (just me) preseason favorite, Washington Redskins, bowed out of the race early, four of my preseason top six look “alive”...

USC Trojans hoping to snap losing streak against Stanford

Stanford is the only Pac-12 team USC quarterback Matt Barkley hasn’t beaten,  but the USC Trojans football team plans to change that this weekend when they take on the Cardinal in Palo Alto. Last season, #20 USC took on Andrew Luck and #6 Stanford at the Coliseum, losing 56-48  in triple overtime, in the highest-scoring game in Trojans’ history. This year, the roles are...

USC bans writer for reporting injury to kicker Andre Heidari

USC just can’t keep themselves out of the news these days. Which is usually a good thing. But when all the news seems to be painting the program in a negative light, it certainly isn’t a good thing. Just in the past month alone, USC has banned visiting teams from conducting walk-throughs at the Coliseum and they have pulled the scholarship of a walk-on player so it could be given...

USC bans writer from Cal game and two weeks of practice for reporting an injury

USC has a fairly simple policy regarding injuries this season: don’t talk about them. That goes for players, coaches, staff and apparently members of the media. Trojans kicker Andre Heidari suffered an injury during the team’s opening game against Hawaii that required knee surgery last week. He did not travel with the team to New Jersey and is expected to miss about three weeks...

Media bans show teams still don't understand access

It's been an interesting week in the college football media universe, with Los Angeles Daily News reporter Scott Wolf briefly banned from USC practices, Washington following in USC's footsteps by prohibiting media from reporting on injuries and SB Nation's Spencer Hall denied a credential for the Florida-Tennessee game. These situations all have their own unique...
