Fox Sports West:
It's a good thing USC pursued and landed Silas Redd.
USC Coach Lane Kiffin confirmed Wednesday that sophomore tailback D.J. Morgan would have knee surgery. Morgan had tweeted his status earlier in the day.
Morgan, who started two games in 2011, rushed for seven yards in his only carry Saturday in the Trojans' 49-10 season-opening victory over Hawaii.
Morgan had reconstructive surgery on his right knee after suffering an injury in high school. Kiffin did not specify if Morgan reinjured the same knee or how long he would be sidelined.
Tailback depth was USC's biggest issue a few weeks before training camp, but Kiffin went all out to recruit Redd after Penn State was hit with NCAA sanctions that allowed players to transfer without having to sit out a season.
Against Hawaii, the junior rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown in nine carries. Senior Curtis McNeal had 14 yards in five carries.
Redd, McNeal and redshirt freshman Javorius Allen are now the only available scholarship tailbacks heading into this Saturday's game against Syracuse at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
"I think it just goes back to how important getting Silas was," Kiffin said. "We're sure happy to have him."

Lane Kiffin reinstated linebacker Simione Vehikite, who was released from jail last week, and his return to the team was at the expense of a walk-on player's scholarship.
As those of us who watch college athletics know all too well, coaching at a high-profile Division-I program is typically more about winning than anything else. Players who contribute to the winning cause are constantly allowed to bend the rules both in the classroom and in everyday life. At USC, for example, a player can be sentenced to jail time and have his scholarship waiting...
USC Coach Lane Kiffin talked to the media following the Trojans final practice before loading the buses to fly to New Jersey. No. 2 USC will take on Syracuse on Saturday at MetLife Stadium.
It’s OK to admit it…you miss the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes. Trust me, I do too. More than you can ever know. Perhaps it’s all my pent-up Cowboys frustration, but there’s just something magical about reveling in the misery of others. The Sweepstakes not only enabled this sadistic sense in me, it allowed me and thousands of others just like me to create narrative out of...
Marqise Lee’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was one of the highlights of college football’s opening weekend, when the USC Trojans beat Hawaii, 49-10 – but the Syracuse special teams unit probably wasn’t thrilled to see it on SportsCenter.
After all, the Orange had given up an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown earlier that day, not to mention a 53-yard return that...
The Trojans continue to prepare to travel to the east coast to take on Syracuse at MetLife Stadium on Saturday...
USC quarterback Matt Barkley held off a surge from West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith to once again top the Heismanpundit/CBSSports.com Heisman Straw Poll, a survey of Heisman voter sentiment released every Tuesday. Barkley, the leader in the preseason edition of the straw poll, collected nine out of a possible 11 first-place votes and totaled 28 points after throwing for...
USC defeated Hawaii 49-10 in their season opener on Saturday afternoon, thanks in large part to the efforts of sophomore receiver Marqise Lee. Lee caught a Matt Barkley pass for a touchdown on the first play of the game, then later broke for a 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
USC redshirt sophomore Hayes Pullard moved inside to start at middle linebacker versus Hawaii. Pullard picked an interception and returned it for a touchdown in the first quarter of USC's 49-10 win over the Warriors.
USC students and alumni weren't the only ones singing "Fight On" last Saturday. Fox executive Dan Shell was also screaming his lungs out at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as the Trojans trounced Hawaii, 49-10, albeit for slightly different reasons.
Shell is in charge of selling sponsorships for USC's athletic programs. But while Shell's title is vice president...
So nice to see you again Lane Kiffin. Four years ago, Syracuse was searching for its next head coach. And guess whose name popped up? A certain disposed Raiders coach who had ties to SU’s athletic director. We know what’s happened since. Kiffin took the Tennessee job, then bolted after a year to USC. The Orange have built slowly, but surely. No corners cut or fast tracks that...
The Syracuse Orange face a daunting task in trying to defeat one of the nation's best on Saturday. CuseNation.com takes an in-depth look at what to expect from the USC Trojans.
LOS ANGELES -- Clearly a 35-0 halftime lead and a 39-point win aren't enough to hold onto the No. 1 spot, at least according to the voters of the AP Poll.
With the newest poll released Tuesday now former No. 1 USC (1-0) fell to the No. 2 spot in favor of Alabama (1-0). The Crimson Tide were a 41-14 winner over Michigan on Saturday in the Cowboys Classic.
USC head coach Lane...
This Southern California team would be a big hit on Broadway. The Trojans have a star-studded cast, capable of breathtaking performances, and there is often some kind of drama swirling around them.
A rare trip to the New York area for No. 2 USC seems perfectly timed for Matt Barkley and Co., but the Trojans will actually be playing off Broadway - albeit on a huge stage.
