Notre Dame football has been in the news for off-the-field incidents far too often in recent years — but here’s a great example of the Fighting Irish making headlines for a great cause. Every year on the Notre Dame campus, thousands of students raise money to support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation — an organization that raises money to fund pediatric cancer research. In addition to raising large sums of money (over $150,000 has been raised recently), many students shave their heads to show solidarity with cancer patients who have to do the same. It has become an annual tradition for many members of the football team to support the cause and get their heads shaved together, while also visiting patients of the Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Today was the first of three days when students gather to shave their heads. Here’s some video as well as pictures of the event: @ndhendy12 and @tpickles11 shaving their heads for the bald and beautiful vine.co/v/bUaunPO3ptX — alex welch (@Irish82Welch) April 17, 2013   Little Angel was joined by some of the @ndfootball team to support his battle with cancer #baldANDbeautiful twitter.com/Aprendergast13… — Ashley Prendergast (@Aprendergast13) April 17, 2013   Love to see the @ndfootball boys out supporting @ndbaldbeauties! twitter.com/MGolicJR57/sta… — Mike Golic Jr (@MGolicJR57) April 17, 2013   Fun night at the #baldandbeautiful !!
