It wasn't the most exciting game but it ended up being a nail-biter with some free football at the end. If you tuned in to see dynamic offenses, this wasn't the game for you. Georgia Tech was held to under 300 total yards (they were held under 300 yards twice last year and lost both of those games) and Virginia Tech didn't do much better as they finished off with 326 (the only game they had under that amount in 2011 was a loss to Clemson).

Lack of offense aside, it was a close hard fought game that had a couple of key plays that swung the momentum. In the fourth quarter with Georgia Tech up by three, Logan Thomas threw a beautiful spiral to Demitri Knowles for a 42 yard TD. This was the first career reception for Knowles, who is a freshman, and he was also being interfered with when he made the catch. Georgia Tech and Tevin Washington were not to be outdone as Washington scrambled around on a 4th and 6 in VT territory and delivered a pass to BJ Bostic, who was being chased by three Hokies, for a first down. Shortly thereafter, Washington hit Deon Hill for a ten yard TD pass to put Georgia Tech up by three with just 44 seconds left.

Logan Thomas then led the Hokies on a quick drive where he completed two key passes to Corey Fuller, including one on a fourth and four. Cody Journell, who had missed a FG earlier, nailed a 41 yarder to put it into OT. In OT, Tevin Washington made the key mistake of the game, which caused Twitter to explode with Reggie Ball references, on 3rd and 6. He got pressure and threw the ball up for grabs towards the end zone and VT came down with the INT. If Tevin throws the ball away or even takes a sack, GT has the chance to attempt a FG and possibly win or continue into a 2nd OT. With little pressure because of Washington's miscue, Virginia Tech was able to get good field position and kick a 17 yard FG to win the game in overtime.

Even though this was just the season opener, it was a key game in the ACC Coastal division as these two teams are the only two to ever represent the Coastal in the ACC Championship Game. Virginia Tech moves forward with Austin Peay next week and Georgia Tech will lick it's wounds with Presbyterian.
