TUCSON -- Arizona senior linebacker Jake Fischer moved from outside linebacker to middle linebacker just a week or so ago, and he's quickly found a home. On Monday, the Pac-12 named him Defensive Player of the Week, after getting a game-high and career-high 13 tackles (including 2.5 for a loss). He also forced a fumble. Arizona defeated Toledo 24-17 in overtime on Saturday. "It's an honor but there are so many things I could have done better," Fischer said at Arizona's weekly press conference on Monday. "I'll just try to improve on those things and become the best player I can be." Arizona is preparing for Oklahoma State on Saturday at Arizona Stadium. As for the switch in positions, Fischer said he prefers the new one. "I like being in the middle of the field and making all the calls," he said. "I did it in high school. I prefer it." He enjoys just being on the field. Last year he sat out with an ACL injury. Oddly, Arizona's coaches named sophomore safety Jared Tevis as their top defensive player. In his first start, he had eight solo tackles and four assisted tackles. UA quarterback Matt Scott was named honorable mention quarterback of the week by the College Football Performance Awards. Scott had a career night against Toledo. He threw for 387 yards, going 30 for 46, including the game-winner in overtime. He also rushed for 74 yards. Arizona's offense finished with 624 yards against the Rockets, the second-most in school history. UA tallied 691 against New Mexico in 1969.
