Star receiver suspended
Reports are coming in that Washington State wide receiver Marquess Wilson was suspended from the team Monday morning.
The reason behind the suspension has, so far, been undisclosed. But also released Monday were reports that Wilson had “stormed out of practice” Sunday night after refusing to participate in drills.
It’s yet to be seen if the two are related, though it’s probably a safe bet to assume they are.
Wilson is the Coug’s star receiver, and arguably their most important player on offense. Just a junior, he leads the team with 52 catches for 813 yards and five touchdowns.
Despite Wilson’s efforts, the Cougars’ 2012 season has been a disaster. The team is 2-7 on the season, and dead last in the Pac-12 at 0-6 in conference play.

First-year coach, and offensive guru, Mike Leach’s offense ranks 100th in the FBS in terms off total yards.
They’re 11th in passing (324 yards per game), but 119th in rushing (29.3 yards per game).
Leach has also been very critical of his players all season long, especially after Saturday’s 6-49 beat-down at the hands of Utah. Wilson had just 73 yards in that game, marking the fourth week in a row in which both WSU failed to score 20 points and Wilson failed to score a touchdown.
I can only imagine that tension between coach and player has been building for some time, leading to Wilson’s leaving of practice.
Outside of the Cougars’ chances of winning another game, the Wilson suspension is sure to hit closer to home. As a junior, Wilson has the opportunity to leave for this year’s NFL draft. While he’s no first rounder, he’s certainly an able talent who could be drafted.
With character issues now on his resume, who knows how that will effect his draft stock. No doubt it will be negatively, but how bad has yet to be seen.
We’ve seen this kind of thing before in the Pac-12, most recently with former Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict. The defensive machine was at one point considered a first-rounder, until personality issues saw him go undrafted in the 2012 draft.
While Wilson isn’t quite the wreck that Burfict was, if he keeps it up who knows how bad his stock will slip.

Precedent does not bode well for Wilson
JUNIOR WIDE RECEIVER Marquess Wilson could be the 18th scholarship player by Cougfan.com’s count to leave Washington State since Mike Leach took over, but the coach could not confirm that during his Monday teleconference. Leach declined to speculate on whether the Cougars’ top wide receiver will return, although Leach’s precedent does not look promising for Wilson.
