June 23, 2012 - Nelson Piquet Jr. became the first Brazilian to win a NASCAR race when he took the checkered flag in the Sargento 200 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
The Camping World Truck Series regular started from the pole, and held off Michael McDowell for the first Nationwide Series win of his career.
"It's difficult to put into words what I'm feeling," said Piquet Jr. "I think we had a great week since the first practice. I learned the track quite quickly and the team helped me out quite a bit."
Piquet led a race-high 19-laps including the final 17.
Danica Patrick had a solid day going until Jacques Villenueve dumped the JR Motorsports driver on the final lap of the race. Patrick was running fourth when Villeneuve drove too hard in to corner #5 and slammed the rear of Patrick's racecar. She worked her car out of the gravel to come back and finish 12th.
Even though the video clearly showed Villeneuve dumped Patrick, Villeneuve denied he did anything wrong. In fact, he went as far as to blame Max Papis.
"We were racing hard and I wasn't fighting with Danica," said Villeneuve. "I was fighting with Max Papis and just before the braking, I guess he was wanting to cross over and go to the inside of Danica. He probably didn't know I was there, so it pushed me in the grass. You don't slow down that much in the grass, so by that time I was on the race track again, I was going a little bit faster than Danica. That's all."
Patrick's teammate Ron Fellows finished third behind Piquet Jr. and McDowell.
Max Papis battled late in the race with Patrick, and was in the outside lane as Villeneuve slammed Patrick on the final lap. But, the cagey road racer managed to avoid the wreck and finish fourth.
Sam Hornish Jr. used some creative pit strategy to round out the top-5. - Captain Thunder - www.CaptainThunderRacing.com
