Yes, this is the final installment of the 2012 Season Review for the Dodgers, and if you want to catch up on the others, then you can check out this tag here. Otherwise, in the tables listed below, I have calculated the WAR (along with its components), value, and surplus value of every player on the Dodgers payroll in 2012. It’s not meant to be taken literally (“A.J. Ellis is a better player than Matt Kemp!“), but I always learn stuff about the team that I hadn’t previously realized when I do it. —– The three best players on the Dodgers, according to WAR, were A.J. Ellis, Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier, in order. The most valuable players, according to surplus value, were A.J. Ellis, Luis Cruz, and Mark Ellis. Best hitters? Kemp, Ethier, and A.J. Ellis. Best baserunners? Dee Gordon, Shane Victorino, and Hanley Ramirez. Best fielders? Mark Ellis, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Cruz. The three worst players on the Dodgers, according to WAR, were Gordon, Juan Rivera, and Alex Castellanos. The l...

Dodgers DFA Scott Van Slyke, Trade In The Works?

The Dodgers have designated Scott Van Slyke for assignment. The move was made earlier today to make room on the 40-man roster for the newly acquired Skip Schumaker. This move left me and a lot of Dodger fans scratching their heads. Why? Because Van Slyke is one of the few options the Dodgers have to play first base and both outfield corner positions. The right-hander also possesses...

Luis Cruz isn't the answer at third base, but there are few alternatives

If only Adrian Beltre was a free agent this winter... Luis Cruz was a nice story. He really was. But a "nice story" isn't good enough to be a starting third baseman in Major League Baseball. Cruz, 28, got a chance to play this season and took advantage of it. He hit .297/.322/.431 in 78 games. He had surprising pop, hitting six home runs and 20 doubles (tied...

A Rare and Quite Gimmicky Clayton Kershaw Addition.

I came across a Clayton Kershaw card a while back that I had no idea even existed. I originally thought it was unknown to me because of how short-printed it was, but after a bit of research I discovered its rarity stemmed from gimmick. If you look closely you'll see "The National 2012" stamped on the right side. Much like Expo 1/1s in hockey, I guess Panini took extras...

Podcast: 'Dugout Blues' episode 14 - Dodgers, Greinke, Ryu, prospects

On this episode of "Dugout Blues," Jared Massey (L.A. Dugout) and I talk about the biggest Dodger news of the offseason -- the Zack Greinke signing. We're both in agreement on this deal and think it's going to be a great thing for the Dodgers. We talk about the Hyun-Jin Ryu signing, which came in at the last minute. We also answer a couple of reader questions...

Mattingly frets over pressure on team

Despite already having $210 million committed to the 2013 payroll, Dodgers skipper Don Mattingly said "it's not fair to the guys" to burden them with unfair expectations.

Gonzalezs philanthropic reputation precedes him

He has been in town for fewer than four months, yet Adrian Gonzalez was greeted by a line snaked around the premises of the East Los Angeles Civic Center on Saturday. Hes handing out toys that he donated as part of the 12th Annual Winter Wonderland Holiday Celebration and East L.A. on Ice, a community gathering five miles southeast of Dodger Stadium in which all interviews but one...

Josh Hamilton, Dodgers Had Talks

Earlier today, the Anaheim Angels signed free-agent Josh Hamilton to a five-year deal, believed to be the result of the Los Angeles Dodgers aggressive moves as of late. Since new ownership has saved the Dodgers from bankruptcy, they have brought in Hanley Ramirez to play shortstop, Adrian Gonzalez to play first base, Carl Crawford to eventually play left field and Josh Beckett, Zack...

A Different Take On The Dodgers’ Spending Spree

The Dodgers are rich. Very rich. After spending $2.15 billion to buy the team, the new owners have opened the checkbook again and again and again. First, in the trade with the Red Sox that netted Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto. Next with the winning bid for Korean pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu. Then with the free-agent signings of Zack Greinke and Brandon League — and...

Red Sox, Dodgers Wrap Up Details From Blockbuster Trade

The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers have finalized their deal that shifted the monetary power in Major League Baseball to the Dodgers last August. The Red Sox will send a total of $11.7 million to the Dodgers in three annual payments of $3.9 million over the course of the next three years as a finalization o0f the deal that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett...

Where the Dodgers were on Hamilton

Yes, the Dodgers had conversations with Josh Hamilton’s agents, Michael Moye and Scott Sanderson. But the impetus for the discussions came from the agents, not club officials, and the talks failed to progress, major-league sources say.   It’s understandable that Moye and Sanderson would want to engage the Dodgers, who under their new ownership have become the biggest spenders...

Dodgers, Angels Favored by Oddsmakers as World Series Favorites After Offseason Shopping Sprees

The World Series will run through Los Angeles this season, if we’re to believe the Las Vegas odds. Bovada.lv has updated its World Series odds, and both the Dodgers and Angels have jumped to the top of the list. The Hollywood inhabitants are spending like drunken sailors this offseason, with the two teams inking arguably the two best free agents on the market. The Dodgers made...

Where’s The Fun In Fiscal Restraint?

Dodgers owner Magic Johnson and GM Ned Colletti introduce Hyun-Jin Ryu last week. I take no credit for that title… In truth I swiped it from a post I read on ESPN last week. No biggie, they won’t even know it’s gone, plus it’s the season of giving (and taking). So… You know, the Dodgers had their own Annual Holiday Party today at Dodger Stadium – only it was a whole lot...

All The Leaves Are Brown…

The Los Angeles Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers have ruled the roost this offseason. The best available free agent players, Josh Hamilton and Zack Greinke, have both been spoken for and it’s official - they love L.A.. There has been a seismic shift in the baseball landscape and the more Bud Selig screams parity, the less of it there seems to be. Meanwhile, all we can do here...
