As the 2012 World Series kicks off tonight, if course there has been a lot of discussion about the two participants. Coming into this season, the Tigers would be considered the favorite. But, the Giants had more regular season wins (91-88) and they also have homefield advantage because of the National League’s victory in this year’s All Star Game. Of course, the NL got their early runs off AL starter Justin Verlander, led by 3B Pablo Sandoval and the currently suspended Melky Cabrera. Matt Cain was the starter for the NL. But still, many think the better team on paper is Detroit, who clearly have the better star power. Another advantage that may be mistaken is behind the bench. Jim Leyland brings his several postseason appearances and leadership against Bruce Bochy. On the surface, it would seem you compare the managerial numbers and it should be a mismatch in Leyland’s favor. Right? Not necessarily. Leyland won his first three division titles with the Pittsburgh Pirates fro...

It wasnt all that long ago that Detroit Tigers fans wanted to burn Jim Leyland in effigy. Now, after five magical weeks, they want to toast the Tigers manager instead. Getting his team to the World Series, which opens Wednesday night in San Francisco, has done wonders for Leyland's image. When the Tigers were three games behind the White Sox with 16 to play, he was labeled...

Tigers' Leyland forced to juggle bullpen

The absence of a certified closer hurt Detroit for the first time in the postseason Thursday night, and it's something Jim Leyland is going to have to deal with if the Tigers are to get out of their 0-2 hole to San Francisco and win the World Series. Some people will recall that Leyland dealt with not having a bona fide closer with his quality Pittsburgh Pirates teams of the...

Giants are playing inspired baseball

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said it best, and he wasn't just being gracious. "I don't think they're getting any breaks," Leyland said of the Giants. "I think they've earned everything they got." Leyland exaggerated slightly, but surely it is no accident that the Giants lead the World Series, two games to none. The Giants are playing exquisite...

Tigers-Giants Preview

Jim Leyland and the Detroit Tigers found out the hard way that rest means rust in the World Series. Six years ago, their last Series appearance, they lounged around for nearly a week before getting wiped out by St. Louis. This time, while once again waiting for the National League opponent to be decided, they stayed busy by working on bunts, playing against their instructional...

Giants rout Cardinals 9-0 to punch ticket to World Series

SAN FRANCISCO -- Bruce Bochy never had a feeling like the one he experienced on Monday. "I'm still numb," the Giants manager said. "These guys deserve all the credit. They were determined not to go home." Rallying from the brink of elimination in consecutive playoff series, San Francisco celebrated a second National League pennant in three seasons with...

Tigers not complicating 2-0 World Series deficit

The Tigers aren't making this more complicated than it needs to be. "They won at home, and now we need to win at home," Game 3 starter Anibal Sanchez said Friday afternoon. "We've got a long way to go." They've heard the stats -- only one team in five manages to win the World Series after falling behind 2-0 -- but that's not what they are talking...

This Feels Like A Trap

People are saying the Giants are getting all the breaks. In this World Series, I have to disagree.  Big time. So far, the Giants have outplayed and outperformed the Tigers.  And it’s not even close. Game 2 fell because of two coaching decisions on the Detroit side, and only one was really a Jim Leyland call.  You know what they are. Prince Fielder Going Home This will be the...

4 games to go. What a tremendous season: AL Central Division Champs. AL Division Series Champs. AL Pennant. Triple Crown Winner. Perhaps another Cy Young winner. But you know what? It’s not enough. The D deserves more.  And we’re gonna get it. ************************* Now, as I’m sure you have all see, there is an abundance of Tigers media out there right now. It’s starting...
