Mike Adams was signed by the Phillies to be the eighth inning set up man and get the ball to Jonathan Papelbon. The eighth inning one was of the big factors that kept the Phillies out of the playoffs as they blew 13 leads in the inning in 2012.
Adams is a 34 year old right hander with a impressive track record as a set up man. In 8 seasons in the major leagues he is 18-15 with a 2.28 ERA. He has an impressive career WHIP of 1.056.
Throws his cutter a lot — more than half of the time — and it’s around 90 mph with good movement. One scout called it “unhittable.” He changes speeds with it very well too.
Has 4-seam fastball that sits around 93 to 95 mph.
He’s got a deceptive delivery, making it tough for the batter to pick up the pitch quickly.
