Another Cubs Blog:
Lou Piniella on Carlos Marmol:
“Right now, he’s going through a little rough spot,” manager Lou Piniella said. “Nobody’s immune from struggling. He’ll take the ball and compete, and he wants to be out there. Good for him.”
38 walks in 35.1 innings this year. Rich Hill walked 18 in 19.1 innings in April, 2008. Apparently that qualifies as a little rough spot since the Cubs optioned Hill to the minors and I recall Lou complaining about him having no control. Rick Ankiel was demoted to AAA and then to AA and then to A ball back in 2001 after he walked 25 in 24 innings. That clearly wasn’t a rough spot since it essentially ended his career as a pitcher.
Wake the **** up, Lou. This isn’t a little rough spot. This is worse than what earned Hill a trip to the minor leagues. It’s worse than what earned a great young pitcher in Rick Ankiel a trip to the low minor leagues.
I’m sorry, people, but Carlos Marmol has lost control worse than either of those. Not to mention, Rick Ankiel was a fantastic pitcher who was coming off a really good season and Rich Hill was also coming off a really good season…in the rotation! Each of these guys were demoted because they had lost it. Rick Ankiel was never the same and became a hitter. Rich Hill has not been the same.
What the hell is it going to take? Why does Rich Hill get optioned to AAA with terrible control after only 3 or 4 starts and Marmol just is going through a little rough patch 3 months into the season? Lou needs to figure it out real quick. This Carlos Marmol is not the same guy that pitched in 2007. 2008 Marmol was not the guy who pitched in 2007.
All I know is that if you’ve lost control even more than the most famous person to do so then it’s not a little rough patch.

Pinella Sends Bradley Home After Dugout Tantrum

Cubs drop two out of three on the South Side
I hope everyone had a better weekend than the Chicago Cubs did as they dropped two out of three games on the South side of town to the crosstown rivals. The White Sox pretty much had their way in the three game series and the biggest highlight for the Cubs was probably the altercation between Lou Piniella and Milton Bradey on Friday.
Leave Carlos Zambrano Alone
Good ol’ Phil Rogers never disappoints. Here’s a bit of his (over) reactionary piece about Big Z’s performance on Sunday against the White Sox.

It's time to waive bye-bye to Big Z
As Lou Piniella was saying on Friday, enough's enough. Get Carlos Zambrano out of here, even if the Cubs have to give him away. He's not the guy you want as the ace of a curse-busting team, and at this point, it's wishful thinking that he'll ever mature into one.

Ozzie has Lou's back
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had no problem with the way Cubs manager Lou Piniella handled the Milton Bradley drama Friday. As a matter of fact, he applauded it. Guillen's problem? There should have been 24 others who policed it beforehand, rather than it escalating to the point it did with the Cubs' skipper.

Fleecing the Pirates So Easy, Even the Nationals Can Do It
The Nationals are in a bit of a quandary. They're trying to convince Mr. Everything, Stephen Strasbourg, to join their woeful franchise for something less than $50 million. Not easy when you're dealing with Scott Boras, who decided to open Rick Ankiel's negotiations with the entirely reasonable comparison between Ankiel and Babe Ruth.
So before they know how much of the $50 million...
