Sporting News staff reports
Despite a recent New York Post report to the contrary, Billy Wagner doesn't plan to retire.
Wagner's agent told FOX Sports that the lefthanded reliever "has every intention of playing next season."
That is quite a contrast to the New York Post story from Tuesday. Wagner told the newspaper he wasn't planning to talk to any teams about a contract for 2010. Asked if that meant he would retire, Wagner said, "Why wouldn't I? I've got nothing else to (accomplish)."
Wagner missed most the 2009 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and finished the season with the Red Sox. "He wants a ring and he did not do all that rehab just to quit now," Wagner's agent told FOX Sports. "His family supports him fully."
The 38-year-old Wagner, who has 385 career saves, will be a free agent this offseason.
