Brett Myers is expected to make a rehab appearance for Reading (AA) on Saturday. Antonio Bastardo has a rehab appearance planned for Monday, with the GCL Phillies (Rookie). Clay Condrey threw a simulated game on Thursday, and may pitch in a non-simulated game next week. J.C. Romero long-tossed on Thursday, and the next stage in his rehab has not been determined. Perhaps Charlie Manuel will actually utilize some of these relief options, when they return to the active roster. Current relief options Chad Durbin and Scott Eyre have been used so infrequently that it is possible that they are struggling with injury concerns of their own. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA) and Reading Phillies (AA) both had their Friday night games postponed, due to rain. Each time will play a doubleheader on Saturday. Fortunately, neither team burned a starting pitcher, in a rain-shortened contest. Joe Savery doesn't handle such things well. The Clearwater Threshers (A) won the first game of their Friday night doubleheader, beating the Daytona Cubs, 3-2. Threshers' starter Jon Velazquez pitched well, permitting only two runs (one earned), in seven innings (two walks/five whiffs). Carlos Monasterios followed with two scoreless frames (two hits, one walk/three whiffs), and picked up the victory, when the Threshers broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning. The Clearwater Threshers were no-hit in the second game, losing 3-0. Perhaps the Threshers would have gotten a hit, if the doubleheader finale wasn't shortened to seven innings. It was the first no-hitter for the Daytona Cubs, in thirteen days. The Threshers did draw three walks in the game, so there's that. Clearwater used three relievers to pitch the game: Walter Tejeda (three innings, two unearned runs), Chris Kissock (two innings, one run), and Michael Schwimer (one scoreless inning). The bullpen game worked out pretty well for the Threshers. Well, except for the no hits.

Hilariously, The Phillies Still Have Faith In Brad Lidge

Right now the Philadelphia Phillies are standing by their closer Brad Lidge. Which is hilarious, considering Lidge currently has a 0-6 record, an astronomical 7.33 ERA, gigantic 1.80 WHIP and nine blown saves in 34 chances. Last season Lidge had a career resurgence, going a perfect 41-for-41 on save opportunities, with a minuscule 1.95 ERA. He [...]

Back to the Lecture at Hand: Phils, Braves, Elements?

I can't really think of a time I was more proud of a 3 ER loser to a last place team on the brink of relegation (if there in fact were relegation in MLB) than I was of JA Happ last night. Sure, it sucks the Phillies lost a series to the Pirates, but his clear displeasure at taking the L showed that this team still totally gives a **** about its remaining schedule despite being up...

The Dip: Chase Utley – Greatest Phillie of All Time?

This is The Dip, a weekly column penned by our own commenter, The Dipsy. Agree or disagree with what he says? Tell us by leaving your comments. When we think of the greatest players of all time we shouldn’t go by pure stats for often they leave a canvas half painted.  There have always been players [...]

Deep-Lee

Garrett Anderson hits a home run off Cliff Lee, the first Lee allows with the Phillies. The three run shot gives Atlanta a 3-1 lead. It’s the most runs Lee has allowed with the Phillies.

Lee will be aiming [...]

Recap: Philadelphia vs. Atlanta

Ryan Howard had another awesome display of power, clubbing a pair of homers, as the Philadelphia Phillies held off Atlanta, 4-2, at a soggy Citizens Bank Park.

Lee suffers first Philly loss

Garret Anderson hit a three-run homer off Cliff Lee and three other Braves went deep to help the Atlanta Braves hand the Phillies' new ace his first NL loss with a 9-1 win Saturday night over Philadelphia in a rain-shortened game.

Jason Knapp to Undergo MRI on Shoulder

When the Cleveland Indians traded Cliff Lee to the Philadelphia Phillies before the deadline it was a tough pill for Indians fans to swallow. For the second straight season a team that was supposed to contend for a division title traded the ace of their rotation. The Tribe got four players in return for Lee from Philadelphia, but the key to the deal was 18-year old right-hander Jason Knapp...

Woodie Fryman: Forgotten Hero of the 1972 Detroit Tigers

He was a tobacco farmer, really. And how many of them play big league baseball? But Woodie Fryman might have been thinking that his days of a full-time purveyor of tobacco were drawing near, as he languished as the black sheep of the Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation in the summer of 1972. It’s a “What have you done for me lately?” business, pro sports is. Often, it’s lately...

Get A Bat

I must admit I don’t really understand the current rankings of Phillies’ concerns. The closer is a problem- but:1. The Phillies have internal options- some of which are better than the external, need to get through waiver options: Ryan Madson, Brett Myers, playing the hot hand in committee: Chan Ho Park and Jamie Moyer!2. Lidge could turn it around yet. He was pretty good against...
