While most assumed that the promotion of Lastings Milledge would coincide with Sandy Alomar Jr.'s return to AAA New Orleans, the organization surprisingly has designated Julio Franco for assignment instead. According to MLB.com's Marty Noble, by retaining Alomar, the Mets will be able to find more pinch-hitting at-bats for Ramon Castro, whose status as the team's lone backup catcher restricted his availability as a pinch-hitter. Alomar, meanwhile, will be looked upon to replace the veteran leadership of the departing Franco. According to Noble, Franco is happy about the move.

Veterans over Evans...

I thought it was interesting that Adam Rubin the other day completed a post on his early 25 man roster predictions, Adam thought the Mets may carry Nick Evans for the first week and then call-up Livan Hernandez as the fifth starter when needed. They could actually carry a sixth bench player even longer if they allowed the longman to make two starts in April. But the Mets went through...

Mets catchers lacking production

Ramon Castro started off hot and has tailed off. Brian Schnieder might be good defensively but has no power. Omar wanted defense .Did he sacrifice too much?

Pudge still on the radar...

Rumors continue to swirl that Ramon Castro isn't exactly in the best graces of the organization. If they are true the Mets would have moved Castro this off-season and replaced him with Pudge Rodriguez. Most thought that his lack of conditioning or fragility were the cause of the thin ice under ...

Tony B. looking for room for Pudge...

Pudge Rodriguez has openly campaigned to join the Mets and has received the support of the Mets contingent on the Puerto Rican team. The Mets have attempted to dismiss rumors linking them to the HOF catcher but now the organizational's very powerful assistant to the GM Tony Bernazard sounds like he's openly supporting the move. It sounds like the only thing in the way of Pudge joining...

Castro Close To Returning To Mets

The Mets and Ramon Castro are close to completing a 2 year deal, the Associated Press reports.

Emerging Backstop Debate

Pudge Rodriguez had four hits Saturday night in the WBC. You could bet his agent was on the phone with Omar Minaya sometime around the 7th inning. Is Pudge necessary? It depends on if you believe Ramon Castro is healthy and ready to contribute for a full With Brian Schneider making four ...

Castro content as a back-up.....

There has been a rumor circulating for at least a month that the Mets have been shopping Ramon Castro. When healthy Castro has been one of the best hitting catchers in the league which leads many to believe that the rumors are false or there must be more to the reason behind the rumors. The idea ...

Castro rumors cont. to swirl....

I can't get a fix on whether this is the same rumor that just keeps getting repeated or the Mets are really pushing to trade Ramon Castro. But now John Perrotto of BA in his weekly column is also reporting that the Mets are looking to trade Castro. It continues to be said that the Mets would be ...

Castro on the block ?

According to the NY Post the Mets are shopping C Ramon Castro, last year there were a few teams that were interested in Castro as a starter but after another year in which he lost time to injuries it's going to be hard to find a team to bite. The last three years in a row Castro has missed time ...

New York Mets 2009 Rundown: Ramon Castro

A first round pick in the 1994 amateur draft by the Houston Astros, Ramon Castro has become a mainstay in New York as a Met. Twice he has seen himself become the front-runner to become the Mets' starting catcher, but both times Omar Minaya has traded to bring in a catcher from another organization (Lo Duca, Schneider). Castro is now considered one of the best backup catchers...

Nationals Look Better, But Need Pitching

This time last year, many were expecting the Nationals to finish with at least 100 losses. However, they put together a solid year with what they had and got 73 wins. Now, they have added three up and coming prospects in Lastings Milledge, Elijah Dukes, and Tyler Clippard, and signed catcher Paul Lo...

Mets Interested In Pudge?

Newsday is reporting that the Mets are still interested in free agent catcher Ivan Rodriguez. The Mets are worried about current backup Ramon Castro's durability, and believe Rodriguez would better compliment the lefty Brian Schneider. Rodriguez is a great leader and would definitely have an impact on some of the Mets' young pitchers. Last season, Rodriguez hit .276 with 7 HR in...

Mets Source: We Have Zero Interest In Pudge

There was an AP report floating around that the Mets were one of three teams Pudge Rodriguez was considering. However, Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post says that despite what Pudge Rodriguez keeps saying, the Mets aren't interested in the veteran catcher and aren't talking to him about a contract. A high-ranking team source said there has been no discussion about Rodriguez in recent...

Mets Trade May Be In The Works?

Despite Omar Minaya's insistence in the last 24 hours that they are done making any significant improvements, I'm not buying it. It sounds too much like... "We did speak with the Twins regarding Johan Santana, but we were not a good match for what they needed." Not even 24 hours after Omar finished saying he was done, several sources are reporting that the Mets are looking to trade...

Odds-N-Ends; Pudge, Cordero & Armas

Despite all of my urgings to the contrary, apparently the Mets have no interest in Pudge Rodriguez. The keep saying that they are completely comfortable with Brian Schneider, Ramon Castro and Robinson Cancel......Despite what Pudge Rodriguez keeps saying, the Mets aren't interested in the ...
