Chad Billingsley (12-6, 3.70) vs. Ryan Dempster (6-7, 4.28). COMMENTS: Dodgers : Cubbies :: Cards : Dodgers? Whatever the analogy, the Boys in Blue are looking to complete a four-game sweep of the Other Boys in Blue today. Unlike in the Cards series, both the Dodger bats and arms have showed up for this Cubs series, although it's unlikely Billingsley (on a pitch count) will be able to match the seven strong innings each turned in by Randy Wolf and Charlie Haeger. But the most notable Dodger still not at full strength is Manny Ramirez, although he's 4-for-11 in this series and may very well be on his way to warming up in September. Let's hope the forecast calls for some H.E.A.T. in the weeks to come. Same two Game Thread superstitions are in play today (not referring to opponents by their name in the headline; posting the GT one minute after the hour). But this time, we're going absolutely NUTS at SoSG and pushing our luck with another superstition: SoSG Sax, 7-0 this season, ...

No Sweep: Cubs 3, Dodgers 1

The Cubs got a consolation win yesterday, whacking Chad Billingsley just enough to keep from having to leave town without a victory; the Dodgers actually didn't play badly (well, except for Manny, who got booed thanks to some egregious defense), but sometimes, them's the breaks. There's a reason why the Dodgers haven't swept a four-game set against the Cubs since some time in the...

GameCast: August 23rd at Los Angeles -- putting the weep in sweep

Ryan Dempster vs. Chad Billingsley Story-LinesThe Cubs play today not only to avoid being swept by the Dodgers, but to also stay above .500 on the season.  Ryan Dempster, who has had just about as bad a season as possible for a guy who just signed a ridiculous 4-year extension, will try to be the stopper. Except -- not to sound like a broken record -- I still don't think...

Unhappy Ending: Dodgers Can’t Complete Sweep

The Los Angeles Dodgers could not finish off the Chicago Cubs.  They fought and they clawed, but nothing could be accomplished against Ryan Dempster.  On a hot Sunday afternoon, the Boys In Blue looked more like they wanted to get into an air-conditioned room rather than play a ball game.  Chad Billingsley turned in a [...]

Dodgers-Cubs: Dempster Breaks Winning Streak, Bats in 3-1 Loss for L.A.

The Los Angeles Dodgers were turned down in an effort to complete a four-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs behind the right arm of their ace, Chad Billingsley. Ryan Dempster was too much to handle as the Boys in Blue fell 3-1 to the visitors from the North Side of Chicago. Billingsley, in his second start back since skipping an outing with a strained hamstring, worked six innings and...

Avoiding Humiliation

The Cubs‘ West Coast trip was disastrous, but at least it wasn’t completely humiliating.  If they’d been swept by the Dodgers…that would’ve made it humiliating. But, thankfully, the Cubs were able to avert the sweep, by hanging a 3-1 win on L.A. behind Ryan Dempster, Jake Fox and a dominating Carlos Marmol. Fox got the offense cranked [...]

Offense Continues to Sputter in 3-1 Loss

The pitching staff couldn't save the Dodgers in the fourth and final game of the Chicago series and Ryan Dempster allowed only three hits and an unearned run as the Cubs won 3-1. Colorado topped the Giants 4-2 and if they can win tonight, the Dodgers and Rockies will tangle in Coors Field with the Los Angeles lead at an even three games.

Cubs 3-1 Dodgers:  Too Little, Too Late

This game was, in some ways, the 2009 Cubs season in microcosm: solid starting pitching, inept offense, some uneven bullpen work, but soomehow they eek out a win…to avoid a four-game sweep.  So, thanks for coming in today, fellas, but this kind of effort would have been helpful before you dropped 8 of your last 13. Ryan Dempster was very sharp, going 7 innings, allowing 1 unearned...

Cubs top Dodgers 3-1

Carlos Marmol earns save for Ryan Dempster; Jake Fox delivers 4 hits LOS ANGELES -- Ryan Dempster saved the Cubs from their first four-game sweep at Dodger Stadium in 44 years Sunday.

Game & Series Recap - Cubs 3, Dodgers 1 (1 game to 3)

Earlier this morning I did a guest spot on Jon Miller's show on KXNO 1460 in Iowa. He asked me if I was ready to throw in the towel on the season, and my response was "in baseball anything can happen, but I don't think a Cubs playoff appearance is high up on the probability list this season." The problem -- well, one big problem -- has been their total inability to defeat good teams...
