The Mets need a top of the rotation starter, a solid #2 to slide in behind Johan Santana. Whether they'll admit it or not, the rotation behind Santana even when it was healthy had too many variables to be considered a pitcher oriented club. Many want the Mets to sign John Lackey regardless of the cost, the 31 y/o free agent is the top pitcher on the market this season. The right hander is a one time All-Star and World Champion with a lifetime ERA of 3.82 and a record of 100-70. The last two seasons he has not made 33 starts ( 24/27) and his ERA has steadily increased ( 3.75/3.83). Some believe Lackey is nothing more then a glorified #2 starter or at best a small market ace, who will get ace money off a good playoff run and a weak starters market. Aaron Gleeman takes a look at Lackey using xFIP which makes him a mid-level #1 starter. As you can see Lackey has posted fairly consistent xFIPs over the past five years, with marks ranging from 3.75 to 4.33. Listed next to his yearly xF...

ALCS: Rainy days and (maybe) Mondays
The decision by MLB to postpone tonight's scheduled Game 6 at Yankee Stadium would appear to be to the advantage of the Los Angeles Angels, who would be in a position to bring back ace John Lackey on Monday if they can defeat Andy Pettitte tomorrow night and extend the series.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi has decided to stay with Pettitte in Game 6 instead of going back to...
How Will Ben Sheets Fare on the Free Agent Market?
After John Lackey, there is no other top flight starter available on the free agent market. Randy Wolf is good, but he is not an ace. Joel Pineiro had a solid 2009, but no one knows if he can repeat that. No one knows exactly how Aroldis Chapman will fare in the majors. Erik Bedard and Justin Duchscherer are very good pitchers when healthy, but the problem has been keeping them healthy...
Advantage Angels: Lackey now in play
Game 6 of the ALCS was postponed by rain (actu ally, it was more like a monsoon) at Yankee Stadium last night, but it was the Angels who came up winners. John Lackey, the Angels' bulldog, their CC Sabathia, said he is good to go.
Lackey wasn't ta...
Scioscia: Lackey likely in a Game 7
The chances for rain and thunder at game time tonight are 90 percent. Should Game 6 be postponed until Sunday night and the Angels then win it, the forecast for John Lackey starting game 7 Monday night on three days' rest is somewhere between 90 an...
Rainout of Game 6 in ALCS gives L.A. Angels more pitching choices
Ace John Lackey could start a potential Game 7 on short rest
The Los Angeles Angels will likely be undergoing a lot of changes this off-season
The Angels have seven potential free agents and it’s looking like a lot of them will be leaving the Angels over the winter. Chone Figgins, John Lackey, Vladimir Guerrero and Bobby Abreu will all likely command top dollar so it will be interesting to see if owner Arte Moreno wants them back or if [...]
For Angels, the end has just begun
They lost the American League Championship Series to the New York Yankees, but with John Lackey and Vladimir Guerrero among the free agents, the team could lose a lot more this off-season.

Come To Think Of It: Rainouts May Benefit Angels In ALCS
The torrential downpours in the Bronx won't likely affect the New York Yankees starting pitching plans, but it could benefit the Angels. For if the series goes to a seventh game, expect John Lackey to now be available...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...
Harper: Ace up sleeve for halos
It's pretty simple, really. You can talk about momentum and the psychology of a rainout, and who really knows. But there's no doubt the Angels have more to gain from last night's rainout simply because it could put their ace, John Lackey, back in play in a big way.
Cafardo on Gonzalez, Martinez, Webb, Lackey
In his column today, the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo brings us a great deal of tidbits from around the majors:
Former Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi and ex-Padres GM Kevin Towers will "likely surface somewhere soon."
Cafardo wonders aloud if new Padres GM Jed Hoyer could work out a deal with his former club and deal Adrian Gonzalez to Boston. One AL...
What the cancellation means
Since the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels are playing Sunday, that means Andy Pettitte gets his usual five days rest.
A.J. Burnett is available out of the pen tomorrow night.
The rain out stopped the Angels’ momentum since they were feeling pretty good about themselves.
If there is a game seven, John Lackey will start [...]
