Game One Hundred-Fifteen - Cubs 3 Pirates 1 WP - Tom Gorzelanny (5-2) LP - Zach Duke (9-11) Save - Kevin Gregg (23) Tom Gorzelanny improved to 2-1 in a Cubs' uniform with a solid outing against his former team. Gorzelanny qualified for the win but left after five innings. Lou Piniella indicated Gorzelanny was not able to get his work in during the week due to the injury he suffered in Colorado and they wanted to shorten him up. Gorzelanny threw the ball well, except for one inning and the Pirates offense took advantage of two walks and a Gorzelanny miscue. The former Pirate gave up just one run on three hits in five innings with three walks and eight strikeouts. Tom Gorzelanny even got into the act offensively. While Zach Duke kept the Cubs in check most of the afternoon he could not retire his former staff mate in the second inning. Gorzelanny lined Duke's first pitch into center with two outs in the bottom of the second. Gorzelanny's second RBI as a Cub plated ...

Three is Enough

The Cubs got 17 against Pirates pitching on Friday.  On Saturday, they only needed 3. Tom Gorzelanny, back on the mound after taking a grounder off his foot his last start, and a trio of relievers made those 3 runs stand up, holding the hideous Pirates to just 5 hits. How feeble was the Pirates’ offensive attack?  [...]

Gorzelanny eager if not anxious for Wrigley debut

Cubs Don’t Lose

The Cubs offense wasn’t as impressive as yesterday, but they took an early 2-0 lead against Zach Duke and Tom Gorzelanny allowed only 1 run in 5 innings. Jeff Baker had a big day today with the game-winning RBI (drove in the 1st run) and he drove in the 3rd and final run with a solo home run. Milton Bradley was back in the lineup today and he scored the first run. Aramis...

Ex doesn't enter, Gorzelanny says

Tom Gorzelanny intends to keep his ticket list short today for his first Wrigley Field start for the Cubs against his former team.

Tom's just terrific

Radar guns can measure pitch speeds, and they showed left-hander Tom Gorzelanny clocking 93 mph fastballs for the Cubs on Saturday against his former Pittsburgh Pirates teammates. Stat sheets can show the results, and they showed Gorzelanny allowed one run and three hits and struck out eight in five innings in the Cubs' 3-1 victory.

Cubs' Gorzelanny anxious to face old team

On Saturday afternoon, Tom Gorzelanny will make his first start for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. What delicious irony that he will pitch against the Pirates, who two weeks ago traded him.

Game 116: Cubs 4 Pirates 1

To begin with, there's no point in complaining about not having Tom Gorzelanny today. This team was almost no-hit by Yusmeiro Petit just over a week ago. No pitching performance shy of a perfect game against them will impress me. I'm not kidding. Actually, there's not a whole lot to say here. This was just another uninspired loss in a long stretch of uninspired losses...

Game Recap: Cubs 3, Pirates 1

(graphic to come soon)Apologies for the lateness -- my internet died for the bulk of yesterday. The Cubs have bounced back nicely from those games where they played actual good teams, beating the Pirates for the second straight day thanks to some solid pitching mixed with a few timely hits. Cub starter Tom Gorzelanny, whose last outing ended abruptly with an injured foot, bounced...

Game Recap: Cubs 3, Pirates 1 --- Who knew we could win two in a row?

Even we here at GROTA can have internet problems, so I'm going to write the shortest recap in history. I didn't get to see yesterday's game, but it sounded decent on paper. Instead I was with the wife at The Proposal. I much rather would have seen the game, but she has allowed me to watch about 110 games this year. So, if any GROTA members want to add to the recap,...
