The initial reaction when it was announced that Jerry Manuel would take over the managerial reins of the Mets was that he's just like Willie Randolph. Just more of the same old, same old. Is this move really going to change anything? Manuel may be laid-back like Randolph, but he's already proven that he's no pushover. He may be nice but he's tough (hey, he calls himself a gangster). He takes his role as the authority seriously. His first test came only one play into his first game at the helm. When Jose Reyes threw his tantrum, Manuel dealt with it right away, going down into the clubhouse to confront the shortstop. He didn't have to bench Reyes the next game because the problem was already solved by the fourth inning. And Manuel insisted it will not happen again because he (jokingly) said he would pull out his blade and cut Reyes. To be honest, there just aren't enough stabbings in the Major Leagues these days. The former infielder (Detroit, Montreal, San Diego; 1975?82) managed the White Sox for six seasons, from 1998?03, and compiled a .516 winning percentage. He won the American League Manager of the Year award in 2000, leading Chicago to the Central Division title (but were swept by Seattle in the opening round of the playoffs). Further proof that he's not a clone of his predecessor is the number of times he's been ejected as a manager: 19. That number includes a whopping 10 times in 2003. Willie didn't even argue 19 times in his managerial career let alone get thrown out of a game (he may have fallen asleep in the dugout that many times, though). Manuel has shown a breeziness with the media that Randolph never had (with the exception being the former manager's last weekend when the Grim Reaper was hanging over his head). Whether he's joking that he has one foot on the top step of the dugout before the game even starts when Oliver Perez is pitching or threatening to stab his star shortstop, he's already given us more one-liners than Randolph and Art Howe had in five-and-a-half years. And for an interim manager, he's quickly proclaimed a number of changes and ideas that he'd like to implement?occasionally using the two hole in the lineup to insert a struggling player so he'll see more fastballs, having more defined roles in the bullpen, and resting his starters more so they'll be fresher, creating an atmosphere more conducive to success (and he wants to try and rest them on the road, so the fans at Shea can see them every home game?should he really be worrying about things like that, though?). Maybe Jerry Manuel will give the team a fresh outlook and create a better atmosphere and culture for the team. Maybe they can compete for a playoff spot. Or maybe this group of players just can't get it done. But Manuel has given the team and their fans some hope. He may not be a gangster but he's not Willie Randolph, either.

Metropolitan Gangster

With Jerry Manuel giving out this absolutely fantastic quote today, what's the over/under on blogs that post something strikingly similar to this poster below? I'm going to go with 100 and I think I'm being conservative.

Jose Reyes - He's No Jimmy Rollins…

The New York Mets continue to try and challenge the Knicks for the title of most dysfunctional team in New York. A day after firing manager Willie Randolph, Jose Reyes is making his own headlines by throwing a tantrum in Anaheim. After leading off the game with a single, Reyes appeared to be walking a little gingerly around the first base bag. Interim manager Jerry Manuel (no...

An Open Letter To Jerry Manuel

Dear Jerry, Congratulations on your recent promotion to manager of the New York Mets. I have already said a prayer for you and I will be sure to light a candle for you on Sunday as well. You probably have already been warned about staying on Tony Bernazard's good side, and going to the SNY Gift shop and loading up on Loudmouths T-shirts and an SNY cap to wear...

Willie 'splains all

He's got no reason to b.s. any of this. Minaya may have had his own neck on the line by the Wilpon brain trust, and the whole thing may have been breaking his heart, but that Willie had to drag his own firing out of him was lame. I heard Minaya on "Mike & the Mad Dog" and he claimed that the whole firing was not pretty, but it was pretty much the way he wanted...

Minaya's Folly

The Mets fan base doesn't know what to do with itself. Neither it seems, do my colleagues in the media. The same people that have been calling for Willie Randolph's head since the end of last season, seem to have softened the last week because Randolph showed a sense of humor – for the first time in four years -- about his inevitable situation.

Who The Hell Is Tony Bernazard And Why Do I Hate Him?

A funny thing happened in the last 48 hours or so. I was reading Newsday and some of the other online Mets beat writer blogs and I saw the name Tony Bernazard in one of the titles. I took a sip of my coffee and then muttered "Damn, I really hate this guy!" "That does it" I thought, "I'm writing a blog about this piece of crap." I stopped and thought...

Hurdle’s Other Dilemma: Replacing Willie Randolph

Four weeks ago, the New York Met made a trip to Coors Field. Right around that same time, despite rumors that Willie Randolph's Mets tenure was nearing it's end, Clint Hurdle announced that he had selected Randolph as one of his coaches for the all-star game at Yankee Stadium. Having heard those rumors, and then having watched [...]

The Mets Didn't Fire Randolph; Everyone Else Did

Willie Randolph has been fired, and he has the Internet to thank. And sports talk radio. And the newspapers. And the TV people. New York Mets GM Oscar Minaya? He's the least culpable, ironically -- though he's the guy who pulled the trigger, or to be more accurate, the plug. Randolph, the now deposed Mets manager, was taken off life support at the rather symbolic time...

Early Morning Madness: Attitude edition

So far, so good. Sure it's only two games, but I like the way Jerry Manuel is handling himself, and more importantly, his team.

Willie Randolph pens his own article

Read Willie Randolph's own article, appearing in the Daily News. It's very cool to see, almost play-by-play, how the whole thing went down between himself and Omar Minaya.

Wille Randolph went from being public enemy #1 to a martyr. Time to stay quiet until the Yankees come calling.

Renaissance

It's been a while since I've written down my thoughts about this team. It's been a while, really, since I took the time to sit down and think about this team, for whatever reason. In between laughing about how Moises can't stay healthy for six innings straight and then laughing some more about how six innings is, oh, infinity times better than what El Duque has pitched this year...

I'm more concerned with Maine then the 5th...

It's a bit of a double standard, aside from Johan Santana who hasn't taken the mound as of yet the Mets starters who are guaranteed spots have been less then impressive. But all we've heard about is the fifth starters spot and how bad the candidates have been; Livan's been ok, Freddy awful, ...

Pitching Woes Continue - Maine to the DL

Who says bullpen injuries don't directly affect a team's starting rotation? With the uncertainty of Billy Wagner's sore forearm, and the unavailability of Aaron Heilman, the Mets needed to create a roster spot for a bullpen arm (rookie Eddie Kunz). Therefore, starter John Maine was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a mild rotator cuff strain. Maine last pitched...
