It is the responsibility of Manager Charlie Manuel to put his team, and his individual players, in position to succeed. In Tuesday night's walk-off loss in Pittsburgh, Manuel failed to do either, at least in regards to Brad Lidge. Pitching for the fourth (!) consecutive game, Lidge failed did not record an out, as the Pirates rallied for a 6-4 win. Given the impressive performance by the Phillies to even create a save opportunity, and the (last) place the Pirates reside in the standings, this loss was a particularly frustrating one. The fatigued closer did not have his good stuff, and failed to adjust. But he never should have been put in that position, with other options (Ryan Madson, Scott Eyre) available, to pick up/combine to pick up the final three outs. Perhaps the real mistake was made Sunday, when Lidge pitched in a non-save situation? Either way, the Phillies lost a game they should have been able to win. Lidge, his confidence buoyed by three consecutive strong outings, saw his ERA rise back over seven (7.33), and he added a ninth blown save, and a sixth loss, to his season's record. Lidge's strong weekend is all-but-forgotten, as the cries for his removal from the closer's role continue. Almost forgotten amidst the fury sparked by the walk-off loss were some impressive individual performances. Jimmy Rollins lead off the game with a home run, on the first pitch he faced. On the second pitch he faced, Rollins hit another homer. Starter Joe Blanton did not have his good stuff, but managed to scrap through six innings, allowing only three runs. All three runs came via the home run. Blanton was a bit wild, throwing only sixty-nine of his one-hundred thirteen (!) pitches for strikes. More accurate home plate umping could have saved Blanton a run, or two, or at least helped him keep his pitch count down. Tyler Walker followed Blanton with two scoreless innings (two walks/two whiffs), before Lidge's blown save. The Phillies looked to be en route to another, come-from-behind victory, when they turned a 3-2 deficit, into a 4-3 lead, in the top of the ninth. The key hits were a pinch-hit double by Ben Francisco, and a Shane Victorino triple. Pirates' closer Matt Capps was charged with his third blown save. Capps wound up with his third win, when Manuel's questionable move helped lead to a Phils' loss. Hopefully, Cole Hamels will get better results in Wednesday night's rematch, and we won't see Lidge for a fifth consecutive day.

Knee-Jerks Unfair to Madson

The criticism of Brad Lidge has been deserved for his performance between April and present. There have been very few outings of his this season that have ended without a cold sweat. He leads the world with the lowest WXRL, and he’ll be setting career highs and lows in all the wrong categories. Don’t want [...]

Agent: Struggling Lidge close to turning corner

Brad Lidge's nightmarish season continued Tuesday night, when he suffered his major-league leading ninth blown save by allowing a two-run, game-winning homer by the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen.

Hilariously, The Phillies Still Have Faith In Brad Lidge

Right now the Philadelphia Phillies are standing by their closer Brad Lidge. Which is hilarious, considering Lidge currently has a 0-6 record, an astronomical 7.33 ERA, gigantic 1.80 WHIP and nine blown saves in 34 chances. Last season Lidge had a career resurgence, going a perfect 41-for-41 on save opportunities, with a minuscule 1.95 ERA. He [...]

Phillies' GM: 'Lidge is our closer' despite struggles

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. reiterated his support for the struggling Brad Lidge on Wednesday, stating emphatically, "Lidge is our closer."

The Case for Co-Closer has Merit

After watching Brad Lidge blow last night’s one-run lead to the Pittsburgh Pirates [sorry, but Luis Cruz, Brandon Moss and Andrew McCutchen are not exactly a modern-day Murderer’s Row] via MLB.com’s Gameday, I nearly lost the deposit on our Cape Cod rental. Naturally,... ...

Who Ya' Gonna' Call?

Over at Beerleaguer Jason Weitzel asked readers the other day whether or not they thought the Phils were peaking too soon, a fair question given the tear they'd been on before last night's ninth inning collapse in Pittsburgh and the lead they've opened over their closer pursuers.Still, my answer would be no and my reasons would be three, as in three straight losses to...

Brad Lidge Deserves Another Chance, But Not in 2009

The air went out of the balloon Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, and it's not because of the Pirates' walk-off home run. PNC Park, rarely even half full, consisted of just as many Phillies fans as there were for the Pirates. Being one of those numerous Philadelphians, it was a rough night. Surprisingly, Pirate fans are some of the grumpiest people I've ever met (this coming...

Houston's Ed Wade Knew What He Was Doing When He Traded Brad Lidge

When Houston Astros General Manager Ed Wade traded closer Brad Lidge and utility player Eric Bruntlett to the Phillies for Michael Bourn, righthanded reliever Geoff Geary, and third-base prospect Mike Costanzo in 2007, he must have known what he was doing. When talking to reporters recently, one reporter noticed the absence of 2008 calendars in Wade's office. "We got...

Brewers Bullpen Baseball

by John Ryan The Phillies are reportedly checking into the availability of Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman. This news is coming only days after Brad Lidge has blown his 9th save of the year and his ERA ballooned near 8. With Brett Myers also returning, this would give the Phillies a promising back of the bullpen [...]

For Phillies, Success Leads to Uncertainty

As the Major League Baseball season enters the final month of the season there are plenty of teams who will wonder if they can sneak into the playoffs through the Wild Card (Tampa Bay Rays) or hold on to dear life and preserve a division lead (L.A. Dodgers). The Philadelphia Phillies will not have such concerns. Their commanding seven-game lead in a rather weak division makes the...
