Pedro: Delgado is carrying us 'on his back'
In his weekly column for Yahoo! Sports longtime baseball writer Gordon Edes visited Shea Stadium and talked with teammates, coaches and scouts about Carlos Delgado's magical turnaround. Here are a few excerpts:
Chipper Jones, Shea Nostalgic
As I sat on the porch this morning with my Newsday, I went through my normal routine. First I read the news, then I look at the ads, then comes the sports section. However, my newspaper was doused when I spit out my morning coffee during a particular article by Barbara Barker entitled "Chipper Nostalgic in Last Week at Shea". Here we go again.
How many cups can you stack on top of a drunk Mets fan?
RockinSteady was at the second game of the doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets Saturday night when a fan passed out from drunkeness. Hilarity ensues!
Since the first game was a FOX Game of the Week broadcast, the Mets didn't have time to clear the stadium for the second game so they allowed the ticketholders of the first one to stay for game 2. Great...
Manuel will look for relief in bats
Following another late-inning meltdown Sunday at Shea Stadium, Mets manager Jerry Manuel calmly stated, "We do have to find a way to add on runs. Those runs are becoming obviously critical to us with the struggles we have in our pen."
That statement was as much an indictment on the Mets bullpen as it was the team's hitting.
Marlon's magic math
ESPN.com uses an interesting tool to forecast who will be in the post season. It's a web site called CoolStandings.com.
The site projects the Mets will win 91.6 games (PW) and loss 70.4 (PL) ? or 92-70.

Maine might be filling in for Billy.....
Last month, John Maine stood at his locker here at Nationals Park and reluctantly spoke about possibly filling in at closer for the injured Billy Wagner. But now Maine would gladly join the bullpen ranks, and he suggested yesterday that he might pitch in relief as soon as next week.
That seems to be a long shot. Maine was excited after playing catch yesterday, when he reported...
Beltran heating it up.............
Carlos Delgado is hearing the MVP chants, but Carlos Beltran continues to be every bit as good as his celebrated teammate lately.
The Mets' center fielder was their offensive catalyst in a 5-0 win over the Braves in Game 2 last night, extending his hitting streak to 11 games with a 3-for-4 effort that included a homer, a double and two runs scored.
Beltran is hitting .429...

David Lennon (Newsday): "Still feel good about Luis Ayala?"
A few more losses like these last two to the Braves, and I may have to change my whole rosy outlook on September. After praising Jerry Manuel's cool demeanor, the resiliency of this pieced-together bullpen and the overall bounce-back ability of the Mets, this was a red-flag weekend at Shea.
Still feel good about Luis Ayala? The key down the stretch is supposed to be the...
