The Mets seem to be heading into the All Star break on a high note. They're finally beginning to hit expectations. They've won six of their last seven games and have cut the Phillies lead to 1.5 games. They seem to be hitting on all cylinders right now despite their starting second baseman and corner outfielders being on the DL. Yesterday was no exception.despite a rain delay the Mets managed to get a lead, tack on a couple of insurance runs later in the game and give Johan Santana his first victory in his last seven starts. Also meeting expectations yesterday was Moises Alou who left a rehab game in the seventh inning with a cramp in his left hamstring after diving for a ball in the outfield. You've got to love the last paragraph of Jon Blau's report on this on MLB.com: " When Alou played for the Mets this season, he was a force in the batter's box. His average (.347) ranks as the second-highest mark of his career, with his best year coming in 2...

Mets Revved Up Over All-Star Snubs

The Mets, usually favorites, are now underdogs. With only one representative in the All-Star Game, the Mets have finally gotten mad. They've won 6 in a row and are ready to prove that they are still a force in the NL. That may not be good news for the rest of the National League in the second half of the season.

Mets sign prospect Benjamin Mark!!!

I can not believe this, at one point a top prospect, Ben Mark has been signed by the mets and is going to the AA Bingamton and will probably be down there for a couple years. He tore up his elbow in his senior year of high school, so teams have been suspect to sign him but since the mets are from New York and have money coming out the you know where they took a chance. At his best...

Early Morning Madness: Sweeeeeeeeeeeep edition

How great does it feel to sweep a team? I know all my Mets friends have been saying all season "Well the team really needs to put together a five or six game win streak before I start to believe." Ya gotta believe.

Maybe we shouldn't vote David Wright into the final All Star spot

David Wright is on the ballot for the final spot on the National League All Star roster. There are posts out the wazoo extolling all of Wright's accomplishments and achievements. Yes, I'd like to see Wright get the recognition he deserves (he is tied for third in the league with 70 RBI). But I'd also like to see the Mets win. We all saw what a day off does to this kid...

Is Mike Pelfrey the Ace of the Mets?

Mike Pelfrey jumped out of the gates of 2008 with two wins, completing a task that took him 12 starts to complete in 2007. With those two wins, he picked up 2/3 of his '07 season midway through April. In his third start, he received a no decision. His next six appearances all resulted in losses, even though he carried a no hitter into the top of the seventh inning on May 15...

Everyone saw this one coming: Moises Alou has a torn hamstring

The always-injured Moises Alou was just served another blow. Alou has a torn hamstring, suffered when diving for a ball in minor league play. Well there is your first mistake: diving for a ball in the minors. You're old, chronically injured, and rehabbing another injury, why in the world are you diving for balls? It's the minors, the results really don't matter. All that...

The Yankee Stadium All Star Game: 1977 vs. 2008

In case you haven't been paying attention to the rampant stretches of white columns that have been terrorizing New York landmarks in the commercials airing on Fox, next week happens to be the MLB All Star Game which is being played for the final time at the current version of Yankee Stadium. The last time the All Star Game was hosted by the Yankees was 31 years ago in 1977...

9th Inning Anxiety

While I watched Billy Wagner once again take years off of the lives of New York Mets fans everywhere when he blew a save recently against the Phillies, it hit me that the feeling of angst I had was way too familiar. It's one of the worst feelings a baseball fan could have, that feeling that no lead is ever safe. Unfortunately, Mets fans know this feeling very well. In my lifetime...

Where are all the Mets detractors now?

For weeks and weeks I've been reading newspaper articles, blogs, forums and all that jazz clamoring for the Mets to make a move, fire people, spark a fire sale and the like. Now that the Mets have gone on to win four in a row and pull within 1.5 games of first place, that seems to have died down significantly, which makes sense. But where is the praise for this team?

Your Nightmares Now Sponsored By Major League Baseball

know they've been up for a while, but I just took a close look at some of these All-Star Game statues and threw up in my mouth a little. In theory, I can appreciate the marketing strategy. Forty-two Statue of Liberty replicas put up throughout NYC, painted in the colors of a Major League team...

How Can It Be An All-Star Game Without Johan?

It's been 48 hours since Major League baseball announced its rosters for the 2008 Midsummer Classic. Since then I've looked at the National League roster about 137 times and there was one player's name I couldn't find: Mets ace Johan Santana. Sure, Mets fans could make the argument that Jose Reyes or David Wright (currently second in the Final Vote, trailing the...

Harden's and Sabathia's move to the NL is part of a larger trend of NL pitching emerging superior to AL pitching. In basketball Brand's move to the Eastern conference is part of a larger trend of the Eastern Conference closing the talent gap on the Western conference.
