The NY Post reports that the Mets have signed Jose Valentin to a minor league contract.
Valentin would earn $800,000 if he were to make the team out of Spring Training.
Valentin was the Mets' primary second baseman in 2006 when he hit .271 with 18 homers.
He broke his tibia the following season and last year never played in the majors, leaving the Mets' Triple-A team in June claiming mental and physical duress.
Valentin certainly had some big moments during his first go-around with the Mets, but I don't see any real chance of him making the team. Most likely, he was signed to fill out a spring roster that is expected to have 14 of its regular players compete in the WBC.
It will be nice to another familiar face in spring games, while Wright, Reyes, Beltran and the other 13 Mets are out doing their thing for promoting Major League Baseball around the world.

It appears as though the Alex Rodriguez bubble-of-a-sports-world we live in has been momentarily popped for the time being, thanks to former Mets infielder Edgardo Alfonzo. Alfonzo, now amazingly just 35 years of age and not 65, apparently didn't retire...

The Steroid Scandal Continues
Like a recurring nightmare, the steroid scandal just won't go away. Baseball fans awake in a cold sweat and are bombarded with analyst of why players with superior talents, such as Alex Rodriquez, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Andy Pettitte, and Roger Clemens, among too many others, would tarnish their lofty accomplishments in the name of greed.
That is what starting the performance...
The Mets Are America's Team
Yes it's true. He told me himself, the legendary Captain America. This past week I took a vacation to Universal Studios in Florida. Being a Mets fan, I couldn't go to Universal Studios and not represent the Mets properly. So I put on the new stadium jacket my cousin got me for Christmas and headed out. Plus it was unseasonably cold so it served as warmth too. Among all of...

The Daily News is reporting that Johan Santana, under the instruction of the New York Mets training staff, has withdrew himself from consideration to play in the World Baseball Classic. Santana, who was slated to pitch for his native Venezuela, will instead remain in Port St. Lucie with the Mets and gear up for a crucial 2009 campaign. From a Mets fan?s perspective it is hard to...
Do the Mets have too many righties in the pen.....
Last week I completed this post, in which it appeared that the Mets were locked into six of the seven bullpen spots. It was even reported that the Mets didn't want to sign a lefty to a major league contract so that all the invites would have a true competition for the final spot but omitted from ...
One last word on Abreu...
Well all it took was a 5MM base salary and another 1MM in achieveable incentives. The Mets were said to be holding the line at under 4MM but Abreu was said to be willing to give a home town discount. I think the Mets will live to regret not finding the extra 3MM ( if it would have cost that) to ...
Use The Asterisk
John Delcos is advocating use of the asterisk for players linked to steroids. Though I believe baseball should be doing more to remove the cheaters from the game I’m also smart enough to realize that it never will because it’s not in their best interest. (A government approved independent ...
